Renegade, I’m un sure about Champion Hills, much of Vicksburg is both National and State Parks. They actually camped on our farm in Raymond, still standing today in a barn with 2 cannon ball holes and a Holly Tree pock marked with target practice is my guess. I was frog shooting on Snake Creek which runs through on our place, heard a odd sound, picked him up and a bayonet in the same grab! Many, many buttons, bullets and a few coins. Find the center of Hinds County on Google earth, it’s a sandstone marker. The barn is within 1/4 mile of the marker, and Snake creek runs beside the marker. The frog and bayonet story is within eye sight. I swear I thought it was Sherman that got Vicksburg and Atlanta. If you ever want to feel sorry for anyone, make it the young boys in Vicksburg that had to mow their yards with push mowers on those hills before mowers had gas engines. Hardest damn job I’ve EVER had, ought to be a law against it.

Sherman got Atlanta. Vicksburg was pretty well leveled during the seige by union artiillery and gunboats on the river. Most of the residents of vicksburg lived underground during the seige, some in pretty elaborate and equipped dug out homes.
Some of the 1st designs of handgrenades in the civil war were used at vicksburg. The trenches in some points of the lines were that close.
Only thing we got up around here is remnants of the iron industry prior to the battle of ft donaldson and the occupation of nashville.
