I have a TC compass bolt action rifle that is 22 inches long with 1/9 twist. What is my bullet weight range between 300-400 yards? Some say this twist is to fast to stabilize bullets over 70 grains past 200 yards.

My .223 9 twist likes 60 grain VMAXs. I hand load them and have had the best luck with the 55 Sierra Blitzking and 60 VMAX. 60 Horn SP is very close to the VMAX as well.the 9 twist will stabilize the 69 tipped match king. I plan to try the 65 Sierra SBT and 62TSX eventually. I’ve used the 50 VMAX, 52 Horn Match HP, 55 VMAX, 60 VMAX and 60 Horn SP.

52 Match HP was good but like shooting a FMJ on critters.

Black Hills loads the 60 VMAX and that’s what I started with to get brass and now I reload.

OP, I think you mean the twist isn’t fast enough to stabilize over 70.

The weight of the bullet matters less than the length of the bullet. Other factors such as altitude also play in. Some bullets might stabilize but longer bullets of same weight might not.

Bullets have a habit of "liking" certain RPM ranges. You can make up for a twist that is a bit slow by increasing velocity, thereby gaining RPM.

That said, I have a Savage BVSS that likes 70's and it's a 9 twist. looking to try 85- 90 at around 2800.

I shoot 77SMKs just fine through a 1/9 twist. Generally outto 300 yds and shoot 75 Amax out to 600 yds. Using a Remington 5R boltgun to shoot up my huge supply of HP match loads. When done, I’ll move down to a lighter Bullet.

What are you wanting to use the rifle for, targets or critters?

For that 300-400 yard range I would want something like a 53 grain Varmageddon or V-Max. Better velocity than a 55 and both of these have a very good B.C. This would be for critters of course.

For paper punching I would lean towards something a bit heavier but that's just me.
