For the gunwriters, a question...

have you heard if W748 is being discontinued?

have been in several Sportsman's Warehouse lately, and they have all of their 8 pound kegs on sale, and get rid of it pricing..

Darn good powder... if its being discontinued, I'll have to pick up a couple or three of the 8 pounders while they are still
on the shelves...

Thanks in advance..

I think it's always been a pretty popular powder. Call Hodgdon, they distribute it.

I'm no gun writer, but have not heard about it being discontinued. I have had very good results with W748 in the 223, with the 50-55 grain bullets.
I've always been a fan of both W748 and W760 powders.

Call Hodgdon and find out. I use a lot of WW-748, and hope they will still be making it.

It does really well in my .358 Win. I hope that is just a rumor.

I did hear about Winchester dropping one of their powders but I forget which. Thought it might be W760 but could possibly include W748. Something about the chemicals involved and dot.gov regs making it too expensive to make or some such. Probably use much of he same chemicals in both powders. Saw that about three or four months ago.

Winchester Australia is dropping the importation of all Winchester powders into Australia as of last year.

Probably won't matter as I don't know a single person who uses Winchester powders...……………….....which is probably why they are being dropped.

extremely heat sensitive. I still have old cans of it that will probably never see use here, only a few though.

I"ve seen it blow the mags out of AR15s going from spring/winter temps to 115 in the shade in TX. It used to be a big powder in the AR circle until folks realized it was so heat sensitive.

FYI.

Normal temps I don't think it matters. But Varget came along and you can let a loaded round sit in the HOT chamber at 115 in the shade for 5 minutes and not have any issues when you shoot it.

not using it in an AR... bolt action 223.. the two powders I've been loading from the start are W 748 and IMR 4895....

I'd hate to see it discontinued...last powder I was using a lot, for varmint season, high volume shooting.. SR 4759 got discontinued...

powder and every bullet I ever seem to start using, I become the kiss of death, as the manufacturer replaces it with some new whizbang "newer technology"... It ain't being old school... and it seems like society is no longer in the "Why fix it if its working camp..."

If its being discontinued, its time for me to stock up on several 8 pounders, before that ship sails...

I just called Hodgdon, but, they are closed on Friday's. Called Powder Valley, and they have no knowledge of 748 going away. And have it in stock.
That's all I got.

Not a gunwriter but saw my local Sportsman's Warehouse recently hold a 'fire sale' on their smokeless powders. It turned out that the local store had too many pounds of powder in stock and they were out of compliance with the fire codes. The fire marshall found out and told SW to reduce their inventory or he would fine them. The store manager told me it was less costly for them to put the powder on sale at greatly reduced prices than it was to pay to return it to their distribution warehouse. My guess is that the slower selling powders were the first ones to be put on sale, and at more of a price reduction. For example, the local SW store never did put H4350 on sale...

I'm sitting with an 8 # can and no need of it any more...…...What is it going for these days. If I sell it, maybe I can get in on the retirement thread. Ray
