Maybe Savage was making light weight axels. I really don’t know what the state of technology was for drivetrains in 1919 so I can’t compare their product to others. But reducing unsprung weight allows your suspension to work at its best possible degree of performance and that could save on tire ware. But then again maybe they were full of crap. So I guess if your 22HP didn’t stop the tiger you we’re screwed if you happened to be packin’ a light weight Savage axel as a back up. Heavy axels, I hear, are better for stopping tigers.

Actually there's some truth in what Jeff said about unsprung weight. But tires wore out regardless in a few thousand miles back then so it was a moot point Savage was making.

Ford Motorsport aluminum driveshaft on the Mustang, something to do with unsprung weight.
