1Longbow- The Alcan Max-Fire 209 primers were considered pretty "hot" primers at the time when Alcan was in business - about 50 years ago. The Lyman Shotshell Handbook, 2nd edition, shows Max-Fire primers using less powder to produce velocities and pressures equal to other brands (Winchester 209, Feceral 209). Some of the old-timers on the shotgunworld handloading forum have written that the Max-Fire was the hottest 209 primer ever made.
The 209 primers made specifically for inline muzzle loaders are milder than primers sold for shotshell reloading. Presumably this is to avoid lifting the projectile off the powder charge before it is suitably lit. However, the makers of Blackhorn 209 powder recommend using hot 209 primers including Federal 209A and CCI209M. The Max-Fire primer would probably be fine in that application. --Bob

I have not used the 209s. Everything I had/have was Alcan 220 Maxfire and they are hot! I loaded 12 ga trap hulls with PB powder as the two worked well together for a 1150 fps, low pressure load.
