for my father, who is 75 years old. He does not want a compact or concealed carry size, but was thinking that he liked the Glock 19x, until he saw the color. We are now looking at/for a Sig P226 (plainer, cheaper one). He would like either 9mm or .40 cal. Are there other suggestions for high functioning, quality handgun in the $500 range or so? I had a P226 and it was the best pointing handgun that I have ever used. I was most accurate shooting it and I think it would be a good option for him if I could find one. Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore has them used for a decent price. Other options?

I was and am a big fan of tha Sig, but after getting a S&W M&P 2.0 the Sig guards the safe. Check out the M&P.

Look at the Canik TP9SA. Outstanding trigger, and mine is very accurate and very reliable. It's amazingly well built, and less expensive than some alternatives.
Be not weary in well doing.

He could pick up a LEO trade in Glock .40 for $300. I have. few of them and they are great guns and really good prices. AIM Surplus is one place to poke around for LEO trade ins.

He has a revolver ccw, but seems to be looking at semi auto for this one.

Very easy to shoot pistol with less perceived recoil than a similar weight and size glock 17. Excellent trigger, dependable and very accurate. 19 mag capacity too, makes it a pretty good choice. I also don't know what the OP meant by they didn't like the color of the glock.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Black is black, and almost every semiauto you look at, Sig or otherwise, is going to be black. The 19X is FDE iirc OP: How is your father's grip strength? Something like the S&W Shield EZ or Walther CCP would be easier to rack the slide on.

I have both 9's and 40 's .At 75 you should be looking at the 9 for just the recoil factor alone. Take a hint if the LEO'S can't handle the recoil why should some one who is 75 and probably has some uncle Arthur in his hands and wrist do any better? 40's can be a hand full and a 1/2 .I'd also suggest a striker fire model with round chamberd so he can get it in action RFN.KISS principle should speak louder than words here.I handle a lot of these new semi autos all time still looking I suppose for a holy grail model but they all have differences that can be a fault to any individual. For instance the slide releases on many models you about need a hammer or crowbar to operate. Hey YOU asked. MB

at 75 he will need something he can pick up and pull the trigger.. slides are too hard to operate for aging people..my home protection is a 44 special revolver. I can pick it up and pull the trigger and it will fire.. fumbling around with an auto will get him killed in a hurry.. 1 am 82 and know what I am talking about... it must be fully loaded and ready to go.. if you insist on an auto it must be fully loaded with one in the chamber and safety off ready to go anything less is a death assignment.

What Hubert said. I'm 80 and still have enough strength to operate most slides, but it is getting more difficult.
I'd add that it should be a gun that he feels comfortable practicing with. I've known too many folks who buy a gun, handle it a bit to get the feel of it, maybe fire a few rounds, then stick it in a night stand. Not the way to go.

If he’s dead set on a) a handgun and b) a semi-auto, I would stick with a 9mm. If hand strength is or might become an issue the S&W Shield EZ is designed to be easy to rack- I out several hundred rounds through one recently and came away impressed.

Racking the slide is definitely something that needs to be considered. He does have trouble with some pistol slides, so one that is easier to slide would be best.
