I am looking for a front and rear retainer for a Savage Spoter 23A. Can anyone help me out? I have also seen it called ejector, mag catch, and mag holding spring.

Good luck on the rear retainer/ejector . That is probably thehardest part to find in the gun. Most of the time the ejector breaks off. I have looked quite abit and not found any except for once in awhile on ebay, usually with a bunch of the rest of the gun for stupid prices. Look at the pics I have listed in the sticky under 99 parts, I have several pics of the retainer.

Yea I saw you pictures, very cool! If I knew the measurements I would make my own. Out of better metal then the pot metal they used when making the gun.

I wish someone would make them. They are just stamped, bent and probably heat treated.

I didn't think that Savage 23As were introduced until 1923. How did you get a 1917 vintage 23A?

Jeff, I thought the same thing I got this Rifle 15 years ago from my Uncle. It was my grandfather's gun and he was born in 1906. When I got the gun it was missing the two items I am looking for, and the mag. the last patented date on the gun reads November 20th 1917. I was alway told it was a model 23 AA. The gun smith shop that I had give it a good once over told me it was a 23AA. When I call a few magazine dealers they told me it was a model 23A. So I called Savage that was a huge waste of time, they did refer me to a Savage Historian who told it was a model 23A. If you look at Tal35 forum pic's all my parts that I do have look like his. I did find the magazine though at a nice price of 87 dollars. I could have bought an new 22 cal for that price.

This is the information on my barrel.
Manufactured bt Savage Arms Corp. Utica N.Y. U.S.A.
Patented November November 28th 1905,Sept. 7th 1915,
Sept 4th 1917, November 20th 1917. 22 Long Rifle

Patent dates are just patent dates, they have little direct relationship to the manufacturing date. IIRC, Rick99 is a 23 collector, so if you provide him the SN, he can probably tell you when it was made.

The 23A didn't get cataloged until after the 1922 22 bolt action rifle, but I can't recall which cataloge it 1st appeared in, maybe #62 or #63.

Does the 23A use the same mag retainer/ejector piece that the 19NRA does?

If your machinest would like I could send him my part to take measurements from, in exchange for a new one, AS LONG AS I GET MY ORIGINAL BACK AS WELL

The barrel address you list can be found on the 1922 Sporter,23A, 23AA and most variations of the NRA1919.

I need to know the serial number range and if it is a sporter or target rifle version.

The early magazine retainer did not have an ejector build in. It was a seperate part in the left side of the receiver. The next version the ejector was built into the retainer. The third version was made for a different style magazine and the retainer and ejector were two pieces. Knowing the serial will answer most questions as to what you have and what you need.

You have a later production 23A.

I would be interested in a couple of the magazine retainers for the 23A, depending on price. Keep me posted.

Rick,

Will the model 19NRA front and rear retainer, work in the 23A. Becuase if it does Savage2005 said he would send the guy in Utah his copy to have copies made of it. So what year do you think my rifle was made? Thanks for all your information Rick!

I think the 19nra was different in that the ejector was built into the receiver. If it has the ejector built on the magazine guide catch , it would work.

The NRA's and the 23's are in the same family...depends on the serial range and which version it is. I think his (Savage2005) NRA (should be in the 25,000-45,000 serial range) is the same style as your 23A. As Tal35 stated, if the ejector is part of the retainer it should work.
