Nice job. Could you have the original barrel re-bored? I don't know what would use the same head as the 250, but I'm sure somebody has come up with a wildcat or two.

Nice rifle, clarkm! My Uncle Bill's .300 was an EG, bought new in 1955 or so. He put a sling on it, a recoil pad ( I know, but remember he was building a hunting rifle and didn't know 99s would be a collector's item someday) and a K4 in Montana Mounts. The K4 had covered turrets, but not a centered reticle, so his crosshairs were just a smidgon in the southwest of the scope. The mounts were made in Livingston MT and were a single thumb screw quick detachable. I've seen an ad for them in an old American Rifleman. They worked, because he took the scope off for me more than once to show me how they worked, and when Bill checked his zero it was always on. He really could shoot that rifle well, both on running and standing deer. His grandson has it now, a fitting place for it indeed, and I understand they put it back in action for his great-grandson to take his first deer. Bill would have been proud!

I can't remember for sure, but I'm pretty sure the .250 Head is .473, same as an 06. Pretty standard.

Well, if'n that's the case......................

Then I should go outside and shout my "Hello???" into the satellite dish and send the signal back out there, right?

You may be closer in your appraisal than we think.

We might be dealing with a space case.

As long as we are quoting poetry....I have one for the OP

As I was going up the stair
I met the man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish, I wish, he'd stay away

Well I got some answers, but they are not worthy and I’m not a gun writer. But here goes...

They are lever action center fire rifles and some of them have killed deer. eek

The tight confinement of the rotary magazine will harbor corona virus waaaay longer than a biosecure opened up tube magazine of the marlin. However being hammeless.....one less thing to disinfect after use.

Goes to show you don't need to ask about 99s people will tell you about them anyway.

The Savage Collectors forum here on this site seems largely dedicated to 99 discussion specifically. One of the more active and civil rooms.

I’m neither a collector nor an accumulater. I’m pretty spartan in firearms gathering actually, and prefer diversification over anything - variety being the spice of life; but after getting one of these I must say I would like at least one if not 2 more.
