I'm shooting 220g nosler partitions at an avg MV of 2753fps using 71.0g of RL22. This is a max load. IMR 4831 gets 2739fps using 70.0g again a max load. H1000 gets 2721fps using 78.0g which is a max load and is compressed. The IMR and RL loads both put 3 shots into 1.5" @ 100yds. The H1000 was about 3 times that size. I gotta say that a 220 grain partition at 2753fps has 3702fpe of muzzle energy. Zeroed at 200yds your down 8.5" at 300yds.

Any good premium 165 grain and up bullet in your 300 Win. will kill your bull nicely.
We usually put one in the lungs, and have them fall over in less then 50yards. Moose often run when hit, unless hit in the brain or spinal colum. Sometimes they just stand there looking at you after being hit. If wounded they often bed down within 150 yards or much less, even if wounded very lightly.
Since you are going to spend a lot of money to go that far up you might as well use one of the many bonded types, copper ones, or the partition.
Your standard bullet at high velocity tends to expand a bit too fast, bad on angle shots, or leg bone hits. Although standard bullets are just fine @ broadside rib shots.
A good 180 grainer will be more then enough. Just try a couple different ones locally available and pick the most accurate one in your rifle.
Do not loose sleep over it, and restrict your experimenting choice to 2 different ones, unless you enjoy playing around loading and wearing out your barrel. Keep it simple.
My Metis buddy in the NWT who has 300+ Moose, 300+ Buffalo, 120 blackies and 3000 Caribou to his name, has used for the last 15 years a 30-06 with 180 grain Nosler Partitions @ 2700 fps. for the big stuff and a .270 with 130 Sierras for the Caribou shot on community hunts for which he gets appointed.
I assume he knows what works by now.
I only shot 34 Moose in my life with a variety of calibers from .308Win. to 35 Whelen, and never found the Nosler Partition lacking in any aspect.
As they say there is more then one good way to skin a cat!!

Shrike, Just a question, not a flame. How could a buddy of yours have so many kills to his name? Even if he kills 5 moose a year he would have to be 70 years old if he began hunting and killing 5 moose every year since he was 10. He then would have to do the same thing with buffalo every year and then kill 50 caribou a year each year. I can't imagine even a guide could see so many animals killed each year in their lifetime yet "have them to his name", implying that he personally pulled the trigger. What's the deal ?

Texas BBQ,

Here is the load a hog hunter in Texas used to kill several hogs - one weighing a little over 300lbs. You being in Texas have probably killed some hogs and know how tough they are.

300 Win mag
159gr EXP Groove Bullet
79gr of Rel 22, no pressure at all
CCI-BR2 Primer
Norma Case
3.505" OAL
Average velocity - 3410 FPS
3 shot group at 100 yards = .375"

Your looking for penetration. Using the 30 caliber S-EXP Groove Bullet would provide maximum penetration on moose and bear. This bullet is not going to come apart. If your interested, let me know, I will make you one heck of a deal.

Don
