I apologize in that this thread breaks from the great good fun of attempting to spread fear, if not outright panic, but I was up late last night and watched an old episode of each of these shows. Jack Webb (rightfully) gets a lot of flak for his wooden performances and monotone voice as Joe Friday in "Dragnet", but he can't hold a candle to Broderick Crawford as Dan Matthews in "Highway Patrol" on either count.

Back then John, even the crooks wore suits, and ties, the badwomen wore nylons, and low heels.

There are stupider things to wear on a daily basis than men's suits, but they rank right up there.

Highway Patrol always seemed phony to me- - - - -even back in my early teens, I knew cops didn't ride around in a fancy Buick!

About 10-12 years ago I got the first couple seasons of "Highway Patrol" on DVD via a special order internet thing. Think I had to place my order and wait until they got a minimum number of orders before they produced the discs. Pretty neat stuff. Did some internet research on "Highway Patrol" and it was pretty enlightening. Learned a lot about it. It was basically all filmed out in the real world on a low budget instead of on a studio lot. Tons of people nobody ever heard of before, or since, although there were a few unknowns who later rose to fame, like a very young Clint Eastwood in one episode from about 1957 IIRC . And Dan Matthews never, ever, picked up the phone and said, "Hello";.....It was ALWAYS, just :...... "Matthews". Those things are a blast to watch. Haven't seen any of it in a few years, gonna have to dig'em out again.

But if you want to see brilliant writing and acting, genius character selection, and have a howling good time, find some Barney Miller episodes.

I always liked the hammer hitting the chisel held by the dirty, sweaty hand at the end.

We get MeTv over the air in these parts.

Old shows all day.

Evenings it’s Gomer Pyle, green acres and 2 episodes of Hogan’s hero’s.

Back in the mid-60's there was some event in Portland, Oregon -- maybe the Rose Festival-- and the German Colonel actor and the actor who played Sgt. Schultz were going to be honored. There was enough uproar over 'Nazis' being honored that those two had to be cancelled. Obviously still a lot of raw feelings from the War.

People wore them back then, and wore hats. Look at pictures of folks at baseball games in the 1940s and early 1950s. Many men wore coats and ties. I see nothing wrong with that.

I watch both shows on Youtube almost every day. I am sick of the krap on TV now. I like the krap back then. wink
