We had an older gentleman on our range with a 1911 with a laser a couple of years ago who stuck his hand in front of his muzzle to see if his laser was on. For some stupid reason, he pulled the trigger. When he came off the range he was bleeding but with his nonchalant manner, I first thought he just had slide bite. Then I saw the hole in the palm of his hand. So much for the old "hit 'em with a .45 in the little finger and they're going down" tale. I was channel surfing last night and found on the Sportsman Channel (Canadian version) a show called "Sasquatch Mountain Man". Not a joke, that is the name. Some dude from Montana who thinks he was born in 1810. Hunts a lot with a Hawken. He tends to carry it over his shoulder hanging onto it near the muzzle. Anyways he was hunting in Alaska late one evening and he tried to shoot a caribou across a river. The caribou were walking and he couldn't get steady enough to shoot that far with iron sights in that little light. He was walking out and commenting about how thick the bush was in parts of Alaska. As it cut to break, a boom and then cursing was heard. I switched channels and when I turned back, he was showing how he shot off the little finger of his left hand at the second knuckle. He said it saved his life. He went to get it treated. Five days later, his appendix burst. He said if he was that far back in Alaska with a burst appendix, he would have died. Trading his pinky finger for his life he thought was a good trade.

I have a 4 inch nickle Mdl 29 Smith I bought off of a Texas DPS officer (Highway Patrol) that retired in the late 1970s He told me that was his choice for a duty gun.

Given modern bullets and loads, the 9mm is sufficient and penetrates better.

I carry a .45 because they don't make a .46! .460 Rowland. .460 S&W Magnum.

I carry a .45 because they don't make a .46! True. But they do make a 48. And a 50 and 51.

Because Glocks can carry twice the amount easily. The Glock 21 holds 14 rounds of .45 ACP, which is the ballistic equivalent of .45 Colt.

Funny how muh modern bullets and loadings help make the 9mm only barely comparable to what the .40 or FBI Lite 10mm was already doing 30 years ago.

. Doesn’t matter how big your bullet is if you don’t hit anything.
Local cop shot 19 times at a bad guy in a back yard at 2 am. Didn’t hit him once. Training - that's the key.......training!

I had a Blackhawk .45 colt for a time. With hot .44mag equivalent loads it was much more recoil than I wanted to deal with shooting one handed while trailing wounded hogs at night. A Glock 20 10mm is much more practical and all the horsepower necessary.

Cops already hard enough to get along with you figure that maybe they will be happier if cheated out of their mag dump?

Our department carries M&P .45s (the 2.0 now). That’s standard issue and what I carry. Those that don’t are maybe 25%, of those most carry 1911s. Have seen a couple 9mm M&Ps too with the long slide. Maybe 150ish officers 100% one shot one kill rating. Sample of one (thankfully).

.44 Magnum is good to 600 yards.
