Was out yesterday morning checking to see about spraying a hayfield, and decided to look in the woods for some morels. I used to find all kinds of them in those woods, but the past several years hadn't found any. I found about a dozen nice ones, just enough for me to eat. Went home, washed them, put them in some salt water and was going to fix them for supper. Took them out of the fridge, and the water was covered with tiny bugs, still alive, even after a good saltwater bath. They weren't much bigger than the head of a pin, but there must have been a thousand of them at least.
I've gathered morels for years, and have found bugs in them after soaking them in saltwater, but nothing that would compare to that. I don't know if I'll ever want to eat any more of them after this. Needlessly to say, I threw them out, as I'm sure there were a lot more bugs that I couldn't see.
Has anyone else ever had this happen?

I always added a splash of vinegar in with the salt water bath. That vinegar kills ALL the bugs. Rinse well after letting the vinegar work for awhile.

You'd be amazed at what's alive in your weekly grocery shopping. Fresh veggies are home to lots of stuff. Cooking kills bugs. 99% of the bugs aren't harmful to eat anyway.

I cut one open once, and there was a dead millipede in it. I always slice them in half to check for bugs, and have probably missed a few, but have never seen so many little ones as I did.

I would have seen if the bugs could survive a hot skillet and butter.

Wouldn't bother me a bit. If you've eaten morels in the past, you've eaten bugs.
Too late now, of course. You've already tossed them.

Read on some Paleo diet website or book that vegetarian Indian immigrants to England suffered from a lack of protein malnutrition. The malnutrition was finally traced to the fact that rice in England was mostly free of bugs, which was their main protein source in India.

How will you get the benefit of the live enzymes in your food, to keep your immune system strong, if you don't eat it while alive?

Now you have me thinking about Morels and the bugs. Another month or so until I will see a Morel here. I don't think I would eat them with all of the bugs though.
