Just announced yesterday they're opening a season. 200 animal herd, 5 tags will be sold, 4 through a public drawing for residents, 1 through a landowner only drawing.

Told my wife now I gotta get a new elk rifle, that I don't have one for eastern hardwoods. She didn't find it funny.

I'll throw my name in the hat. I figure the odds will be 1 in 10,000 or so but you never know. It will be a real money maker for the MDC for sure.

Even if you guys think the odds are laughable, i'd recommend putting yourself and children in for this hunt. This group of animals could very well grow into a very huntable population at some point in time and if the state eventually goes to a point system it is paramount to get in at the ground floor to be competitive someday, even if its 20 years from now.

I'm putting in for it, and probably my wife as well. Kids are 6 and 9 so they're not quite ready.

I don't think there is any point system set up yet, think its purely a simple lottery at this point.

Now Ted, there are plenty of us Missouri Mules that killed an elk before, I see one of yours in the pic. But Lordy you are correct, no matter where it is that first one on the ground is a sight.

I'm looking at it in a serious way. Be Well, Rustyzipper.

I'll be applying, along with all my deer hunting relatives and buddies. If I can't draw, would love to assist one of them.

I read this in the regulations

ASSISTING OTHER ELK HUNTERS

...a filled or unfilled elk hunting permit is required to assist others in taking elk, which includes calling and spotting.

Combine this silly rule with just about all of the only open areas on public land in the elk elk zone being off limits and it may be a tough tag to fill. I worked for the Conservation department in that area one summer. It can be some wooly country.
