While tracking down some scope block that fit a Spiegel I also found King-Pike mounts, the rear mounts similar to the Lyman block but uses a narrower hole pattern.

Here are top & bottom views of the front & rear with a Lyman Y 'Spiegel' rear for comparison,
the King-Pike mounts are contoured both ways & fit quite well -

Here's a link to the information on the Lyman blocks if interested - 24hourcampfire/14773306

I have seen those before and they don't look like they would would hold a scope down very securely. How solid of a mount was King Pike?.

It mounts using 2 6-48 screws in each piece, same as used to mount scope blocks, but the bases are wider & better contoured so they will be a lot more solid than blocks. The front block has a lip that buts against the chamber edge on the front of the receiver further supporting it. I think most two piece mounts just used 2 6-48 screws in each piece.

The scope is held in the mount with a spring loaded plunger so there will be some give if the scope is bumped, how much depending on direction, and the scope should snap back into position if not hit real hard.

Of course all this is based on looking at the mounts without them actually being on a rifle.

I have a couple of sets of King-Pike bases and rings that I bought for the "cool" factor, along with 2 sets of 1" rings arnd 1 set of 7/8" rings.

I think that they are an inferior design compared to other detachable mounts sold during the 1950's. B&L adjustable mounts for use with scopes that didn't have internal adjustments and Leupold Detacho-Mounts for scopes that did have internal adjustments. The fact that the King-Pikie rings weren't split required a user to remove, at a minimum, the ocular bell housing and the close ring spacing limited the range of eye relief, thereby limiting the makes/models of scopes that would work with them.

To my way of thinking, they are antiques more suitable for collecting dust on the shelf than for attaching a scope to a rifle, but they aren't common 60+ years later and appeal to the collector who wants to have a comprehensive set of mounts from the era in question.

I've seen only a couple 99's with these mounts on them. Agree they don't look real secure, wouldn't want to go on a hunt with one.Kind of cool looking though, and wouldn't mind having a 99 with one in my collection - kind of like a Boone scope.
