I put up a similar post the other day on my local forum here in Virginia...

But mine was for Australian shepherds, although my dog sure looks like a border collie.

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

Super cool dogs for the right person. Not a dog you can lock inside all day while at work. They need to be active and challenged. They can be pretty sensitive, so you have to pretty calm when training. I’ve had a couple, couldn’t imagine life without one.

Best dogs we have ever had. And what Stormin Norman says above about them at times being sensitive is what we found. Most just want to do what you ask and please you, so it does not often take much for correction. Our border collie Isaiah who we had for 13 years was the most magical dog we ever had. Boy, we miss him! And those dogs are smarter than most men.

A friend of mine has five of them. He raised two from pups and got the others from a border collie rescue place. He fenced in about an acre of his yard next to the house and has a door for them so they can come in and out of the house as they please. I drop in and take care of them when he's away.

The three he got from the rescue hadn't been abused. But they had been neglected to the point that they're not very social. But he's been working with them,...bringing them along slow, and they're gradually coming around.

One of them, a little female, would always hide from me at first when I would drop by to feed them. I would go get her from her hiding place, sit her on the couch, then hold the dog food bowl in my hand while she ate from it. If I just set her bowl down and left it, the other dogs would eat it before she came out of hiding.

After a few days of that, she would go sit on the couch when I would drop by and wait for me to feed her.

After he came back from vacation he said that it took him a couple of days to get her over wanting to be hand fed on the couch.

Excellent dogs,..very intelligent. But as mentioned, it seems like they need to be raised with a soft hand.

Neat dogs for sure, keep us posted if you get another one Jeff.

Grandpa had one to keep him company out on the ranch, it wasn't trained much, but it was a good dog, and could follow a few simple commands for working cattle.

I'd like to get one sometime too.

I just gotta lead on two this morning within 20 miles of me.
Negotiating right now, she has 2, 8 week old males, $1K ea.
All paper-up some hot blood line she's bragging about, I'm not impressed with all that schit.
I just want a healthy dog....

Then focus on whatever the normal health clearances are for the breed. I'm a Labrador guy, so any pup I buy is going to be from parents with OFA hip and elbow screening and DNA testing for EIC, CNM and PRA at a minimum. Because tricuspid valve dysplasia has become prevalent in field labs, I also look for a heart echo. It should be easy to find out what Border Collies are prone to and what the "standard" health testing is for the breed.

She says If I agree to buy the dog will go to the vet to get some sorta medical certificate prior to me taking possession.
Says they come with a guarantee of some sort.

I got my current BC from a ranch in Anaconda, his parents were papered but I didn't register him. I just wanted a good dog and I'm not a breeder. We have a mini aussie, and all the BC in rescue were dog aggressive so we ended up getting a pup to avoid drama. The only issue we have with him is he like to play alpha male when he meets other dogs and he is with us. We took him to dog daycare to see if being around 50 other dogs would cure that issue, and he was fine alone. It's with his humans around he doesn't like other dogs, strange chit. And if he see's kids playing he goes nuts and wants to join in, he loves kids.

That actually sounds pretty normal for a stock dog Norman.

Maybe Jim, I'd take a two or three year old.
They are just hard to come by outside of the farm/ranch world.
1000 to 1600 is the going rate with these puppy mills that sell them.

I have a horse rancher that breeds them in Ocala Florida that owes me one.
I rescued his airboat off the bottom of the Waccassasa River a few years back.
I'd just come out of Alaska in February and happened upon them.
These Florida coyboys thought it was cold and didn't want to get wet.
I had all the lines and did all the underwater work for them.

He promised me a dog that day.

Told me when ever I was ready to call him.
I lost his contact info..damn.....
They were straight up guys, I know he'd hold to his word.

How do you sink one of those? Forget the plug?

So people breed stock dogs just for pets?

Well he claimed the wind blew him over.
But what he did was over shoot the boat ramp and then went to do a 180 and turn around and went limp when was looking at all that rock riprap.
He backed off the throttle mid turn and swamped himself.
I just played along, didn't tell him I been running airboats since I was 10 years old.

Isn't it funny how so many people can't laugh about pulling a head up the ass move and come up with some BS.

Border collie are one of the smartest dogs going. Problem is, they are hyper, have a herding instinct that never shuts off, and tend to be scared of gunshots. If those aren't issues for you, then they areawesome. I am an ausie shepherd guy my self.
