Luck of the draw gave me a permit for first 7 day time period. Could not hunt first two days because of work, but crawled into the blind before daylight this morning. My blind was setup on the edge of a small field near a well known roosting area about 100 yards out. A Barred owl sounded off a couple times and got some toms gobbling. At daylight I did some calling and soon I could hear some fly down sounds.
I did some sweet talking and two toms headed for my decoys. Unfortunately, 7 hens came into the field between them and my decoys. The toms strutted in and around the hens for about a 15 minutes out of range and I could not get them interested in my decoys. Then I got a break when a jake emerged from the left of the group and headed for my decoys. The two toms spotted him just as he got up to my decoys and flew/ran straight for him. The jake must have been really in love because he didn't skedaddle and I saved him with a load of #5 shot into the biggest tom.
Calls that I use and Flambeau feather flex decoys.
