Back in "the day" my first centerfire rifle was a Remington Model 742 in 308. I loaded range brass with a Lee Loader, neck size only. I loaded 180 grain bullets with IMR 4064 and killed NY State deer with no problem. My friends with 740s and 742s in 30-06 had problems with brass sticking in the chamber. I never did. It's the rifle of choice for NY State deer hunters, or at least it was.

My first Rifle was a 742 BDL, back in 1979, .308 Win. The first 5 shots out of the gun with iron sights, and Remington 180 grain round nose soft points, was at an empty Schlitz beer can at 50 yards. The first 4 shots hit the center of the can and never even moved it. I thought that I was missing it slightly, because the dirt was flying up just behind it. The fifth shot hit the top of the can- sent flying along the ground. I was shocked how the first 4 shots were in the Schlitz label on the can. I later mounted a 4X Redfield widefield scope on Leupold mounts, shot my first deer (a large doe ) at 225 yards on the run, on a beanfield, at the break of dawn. That automatic really shot well, like a bolt gun.

Top side. Dad has been using the 740 in 308 since 1958. Only jams he has had were with round nose bullets. A lot can be said for keeping it clean.

I can tell you that I saw dozens and dozens of these Remington autos growing up in upstate NY. The long action calibers were Jamingtons. I had a 280 and I don't think I ever put 3 rounds through it in a row without it jamming. It was a POS
Having said that, all of the 308's I ever saw never ever jammed. My Grandfather had one and in 30 years, it never jammed once and it shot a lot of deer and a few bear. Other guys in our group had 308's and I never saw one jam.
If I was going to own one of these it would be a 308 or 243
30-06's, 280's and 270's where mostly all single shots with 4 in the clip in my experience.

Are the groups in your pictures shot at 100 yards?

About 5-6 years ago, I picked up a 740 chambered in ‘06 for next to nothing at my LGS. Decent bore, no cracks in the wood, but hardly any bluing left anywhere. It looked like an old spanner wrench in your grandfather’s wooden tool chest. I tore it down as much as I dared for a really good scrubbing. A old steel-tube Weaver 4x came out of my spares and looked good on it. I had some 180 grain RN Cor-Lokts and some pulldown 4895, so I loaded up 50 rounds of a Garand-level load and went to the range. Darned if that old semi didn’t shoot 1 1/2” groups at 100 yards magazine after magazine. I hunted with it a bit, then sold it FTF from an Armslist ad. I met the buyer in a Walmart parking lot, and we did the “cash and a handshake” deal right there!

Not that this will add anything to this thread, but this is a picture of me with my Dad's rifle. A 740 in '06. It never got him a deer only because he couldn't hit a bull in the ass with a base fiddle. I killed an Anticosti buck with is and my wife killed her first bull moose with it. This particular one has never failed.. Jimmy is a great guy to do business with and sells GREAT stuff. I gave my son his grandfather's gun, but he wouldn't take it till something was killed with it. MY Dad was a guy that bought a box of shells and it would last 20 years.
