A local auction house has a Remington Rolling Block in 52-60 cal but I can't find any reference to that cartridge. Was there such a cartridge?

Sounds like a mistake to me, no such caliber unless somebody made it up on their own. It's not listed in my copy of "Cartridges of the World" which has about everything. If they have a time to inspect the items, or have good photos, you might be able to tell what it is. Sometimes a mislabeled item can mean a great deal on a internet auction if it scares folks off. If it goes cheap enough, buy it anyway, for the action if nothing else. You can always have it re-bored, sleeved, or re-barrelled.

Yeah, I couldn't find any reference to that cartridge in any of the books I have but thought I'd missed something. It's an on-line auction only and it's entirely possible they don't know what they have. I'm not sure how interested I am so here's a link if anyone is interested (hope this isn't against the rules). It's item 104. https://wendtauction.hibid.com/catalog/208398/04-firearms-auction--online-only-/?cpage=3

No markings visible. Remington made these is various calibers for foreign armies.. 43 Spanish, 11mm, 12.17 mm, etc. As far as I know, the 12.17 mm was the largest caliber made in a Rolling Block for foreign countries. That is only a .48 cal. The US Army and various state militias used the guns in 50-70 Govt.
