I read this stuff and although I know a 358 isn’t especially good for anything, I find myself thinking about getting one. Pure madness.

So true! I think from varmits on up a person would be spoiled with 5 rifles. Pretty much the whole spectrum of medium bores don’t offer much. I can understand wanting something different though.

I have had two, one a BLR that took a hog, and another 700 that never killed anything. Both went down the road. Every time I read a thread like this, I get the itch. Then think a 338 Federal would be better with my current supply of 338 bullets. Which leads me to thinking I can just load my 338-06's to moderate levels and be just fine.

So how is that for rationalizing myself out of being a looney?

The 358 winchester gives more knock-down power and range per grain of powder, than anything out there.

Would think the 9.3x57 will give it a comparable lethal run using same weight bullets and maybe better with heavier bullets.

75 percent of the power of my 9.3x62 mauser using 50 percent less powder.

50% less..?

[quote=rickt300]My 358 was a Browning BLR, one of the early models. I played with the 200 gr. bullets for a few years but ended up running 250 grain Hornady RN's and Speer spitzers at 2200 fps. Always got exits and short to non existent trailings jobs. It was a bit buckish and way too shiny for my tastes so I sold it for a bit more than I paid for it planning to build a bolt gun on a short Remington or Marlin XS7 but instead I built a Whelen on a M98. I loaded the Whelen with the 250 gr. bullets at 2300 fps, never had an issue using this rifle for night hog hunting and I took some big ones with this rifle. [u[b]I really like the 35 caliber and it is unfortunate they never really became popular here.[Quote]

The 35s may not be too popular with the Joe Sixpack crowd but they sure seem very popular with rifle looneys.

The flatbill, Sitka Carbon fiber barrel crowd think you gotta kill game at 1200 yards.

I'd say it works fantastic out to 250, and okay to about 300. after that it's hard to find a bullet that would perform well because velocity falls off too badly.

however, I dont shoot at edible game beyond 300 anyhow.

most of the better projectiles are pricey, though. the 225PT is >$1.00 ea just for the bullet. frown

At .358 Win velocities chunking 200+ grain bullets, I don't think premium bullets are really needed. Barnes 200 and 225 tsx are $.67/bullet at MidwayUSA right now though.
