Gents, the lovely bride and I are considering a fall getaway to somewhere in the southeast this fall. Thinking about the 3rd or 4th week of October as we need to work around my deer hunt.

We'll fly in and spend 4 or 5 nights. We're more interested in scenery than nightlife, but enjoy cool places and good food. We're thinking the Carolinas, TN or GA but are open to other suggestions. I'll rent a car and we aren't opposed to switching hotels but prefer to stay in a ~200 radius. Beaches are fine but we're focused on 'us' so there won't be any fishing. Outdoor stuff/hiking is always great. Is that too late in the season for any fall color drives? Wife would love a hotsprings and/or spa but doesn't want anything ultra-high-end. I don't mind dropping a little coin but prefer to avoid the $300/night places. I have a ton of Hilton hotel points if you recommend any of their properties in the region.

Neither of us have ever vacationed in the region so I'm open to suggestions (no CiCi's, Golden Corral, Balogna, or Vienna Sausage factory tours, please). Anything else to consider?

Thanks in advance!

Table Rock State Park, mountains of SC. Excellent spot, fantastic fall views, hiking trails. Rent a cabin and thank me later.

Lots of people love the Smoky Mountains. I do not.

I would suggest Savannah, Georgia or Charleston, South Carolina.

Brunswick might be nice that time of year.

Smoky Mountain NP is worth a look for a trip with the wife. Lots of stuff to do both in the mountains and in town. Good restaurants and lots of options

Check out Helen GA. Neat little alpine inspired town. Shops, cabins for rent. Little river flowing though that you can float if you choose. Been almost 20 years since I have been there but I keep wanting to make another trip one day.

I am so confused, it gives me headaches. Table Rock State Park is on Table Rock Lake down just west of Branson Missouri...

It was infested with bikers when we were there a couple of years ago. It may have been a holiday weekend though, can't remember. Pretty cool little touristy town, really good fudge shops, and there is a German bakery in town that is to die for. Not a terrible drive down from Asheville. Worth a day or two to explore.

Asheville is a nice place for four or five days of relaxation. The Biltmore is a nice tour. Traffic sucks though; they are trying to compete with Nashville, Orlando and Atlanta for schittiest traffic in the South.

Chattanooga is also a pretty cool place for four or five days. Traffic is not bad at all, Rock City and Ruby Falls are worth seeing, and there are battlefields all over the place if you like history.

Blue Ridge, Dahlonega, Helen, Ga area. We have a cabin there, the scenery and the food can't be beat in the fall. If you decide to go there, PM me and I will give you all the good eating places in that area. I know the area well.

That time of year should be good for colors but a lot is dependent on the weather leading up to that time... living most of my life in Georgia and Tennessee (about 50 years).... I would suggest the mountains of TN and over into NC... take the blue ridge parkway... Tons and tons of scenery... lots of really great places to eat... I would avoid Gatlinburg and Pigeon forge as they are nothing but a tourist trap (kind of like Helen Georgia mentioned earlier)

Flying into Atlanta would probably be the cheapest spot to fly into... and probably the easier with no connections most of the time since it is a major hub. (depending on where you are coming from)... easy drive from there up... The Dillard house which was recommended above (in Georgia) is a very nice stop and the food is incredible... it is on the south side of the mountains... easy peaceful ride north of there over into TN and the mountains... Fly into Atlanta during the day, overnight at the Dillard house... get up have breakfast there and go on into the Appalachian mountains...
