I am so confused, it gives me headaches. Table Rock State Park is on Table Rock Lake down just west of Branson Missouri... Talking about Table Rock SP in South Carolina . God’s front porch.

I worked in a blue Ridge, Dahlonega and Helen....they are all so touristy now it’s just not fun anymore. You don't have to do the "touristy" stuff, plenty of local knowledge stuff there.

Highly recommend Smokey Mountains National Park Gatlinburg, Tennessee/Cherokee, North Carolina. Beautiful country. Check out Smokey Mountain Knife Works at Pidgeon Forge, Tennessee on your way close to I-81. World's largest knife show room (3 stories). Head south to Chattanooga. Don't miss the Tennessee State Aquarium there. Amazing fresh water aquatic life there. Also take a ride on the Tennessee Railway, a steam locomotive. Well worth the time. Many hiking trails in the area. Don't miss Rock City, it is a treat for young and old. See 7 states from one point there. Ruby Falls as well. National Park Battlefields in the area: Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain. If you are into cast iron cooking, Lodge Manufacturing's factory is at nearby South Pittsburg, Tennessee. All sorts of things to do and see in east Tennessee.

I am an Asheville native and currently live just north if there. Lots of stuff has been mentioned. I would add taking a train ride on Great Smokey Mountains Railroad out of Bryson City. Take a white water rafting trip on the Nanthala river. Both are fun. I have an air B and B in Asheville if you need a place to stay.

Outer banks should be pretty quiet and relaxing by October. Barring late hurricanes.

KFWA gave a lot of good advice that I was ready to mention. Cherohala Skyway and Bald River Falls is great, the bakery in Tellico is excellent.
The Smokies are great if you’re a half mile off road walking a trail, otherwise can be a zoo. If you go, I’d be there mid week. There are a lot of interesting NC towns along the mountains, that can make for some leisurely driving loops.
Chattanooga and North Ga have a lot to see. Can’t remember if anyone mentioned it, but there are some historical sites especially the Trail of Tears and Chickamauga National Battlefield that are worth seeing.
