Chit, this went 2 pages with (mostly, for this place) civil responses. I'd say we're ahead of the curve on this thread.

Nice. I'm turning 54 this summer. I like to walk and "hike" on some of the trails around town. But I have several aging injuries from sports and active duty years and have good days and bad days with the knees and ankles. Biking seems to be one of those activities I can do without issues. On the budget side, I have no problem paying $2,000-3,000 for a bike that will last for years and have quality components.

What's just slightly more gay? An online identity that starts with "Hotrod". Seriously, it screams "I was a former gay porn star"

Now, maybe you is, or maybe you ain't. But you should be the last to start throwing stones, Rod....

Well there is a lot of let's say information here. Not one person asked you what Downhill means to you or how serious you really are interested in that. Not one person asked your size and build. So as far as I am concerned not many good pointers thrown at you.

I ride more than a little From Trail riding, free riding, Dirt Jumps, to my favorite Bike park DH.

If you can give some more detail I could certainly give you some solid advice, but I and everyone else really needs more info.

$2K to $3K can get you a great used bike. $3K'ish can also get you a new bike that would be good for riding that with some upgrades later on that would make it very suitable.

Bang for the buck in a bike with potential to DH I would look at YT Capra.

An Intense Tracer would be a great choice.

Mondraker Dune is a good bike.

Pivot Firebird or Mach 6 is an excellent bike.

Commencal Clash or Essential Fox is a great bike.

Ibis Ripmo AF is a great bike

I would suggest staying away from Kona, Santa Cruz, Cannondale, and Trek.

If you don't want to buy new you can get a lot with $3K in the used market, I highly suggest looking on Pinkbike.com

If you honestly think you will do any DH I would look at Endro bikes. You can get away with a Trail bike but it is not going to stand up long term.

I ride an Intense Tracer as my all mountain trail bike but it can handle bike parks and free riding. I also have a Pivot Firebird as my single crown park bike. A Pivot Phoenix straight up DH single speed Triple crown. A Transition PB&J dirt jumper. Last a Transition Throttle Hardtail hardcore trail/free ride bike. I have rode 30 of the Mountain Bike Parks in North America from Whistler to Highlands. Do yourself a favor and save enough money to buy yourself a good full face Helmet. I recommend leg protection as well.

It ain’t rocket science. It’s a bicycle and you’ve been given some sound and solid advice here...based on the information you’ve provided...regardless of what some clearly self-proclaimed ‘expert’ asserts. A lotta people that have responded to your thread have a lotta experience riding mountain bikes over all kinds of terrain. ‘Most’ experienced riders here don’t need your height and weight and “build” to answer the basic questions that you’ve asked. The guy at the bike shop will fit you to the correct sized frame for you. As many experienced and knowledgeable riders here have said, a good 29’er hardtail will do all that you’ve expressed you want to do in your posts. And you sure as heck don’t need to spend 3G’s to do it either...unless you just want to.

Ummm...

He wants to start riding for exercise. Starting off on a $4K enduro/trail bike that weighs 30 lbs probably isn't what's called for, don't you think?

Wouldn't a 27.5" hardtail with less than 100mm of fork travel be more useful for a pavement /fire road cruiser? I mean, I went pretty dang fast down fire roads with just 0-50mm of travel back in the stone age.

My thoughts: start basic, and find out what really appeals after a while.

I’ll turn 54 in July. Started with subdivision riding to build up and progressed to trails about five weeks ago. Trails kick my butt still but I’m a bit stronger on them each time I go out. We bought my younger son a less expensive Specialized bike. Since he is still growing I didn’t want to spend a ton on a high end bike just to replace it in a couple years as he gets taller. We were able to try several different Specialized and Trek models. It seems that the splits are somewhere around 500 for basic, 800-1200 and then 1500-1800 in hard tails. Big jump after that is full suspension.

I’ve never been a bike rider, well, since I was a kid on a banana seat
Schwinn. I’m loving it. Great exercise, great challenge and great time and memory with my boys. Having them to push me and seeing us build these skills together is great stuff. Let us know how things turn out.

Road and trails of course are two whole different ballgames, with off roading requiring far more effort per mile.

I got serious about bicycles age 56 in August of 2013, preparing for a 2,000 mile ride to NY State in June of 2014.

When I started, mid August, eight miles on a bicycle felt like a long ride. I was able to ride my first 100 mile day in December of that same year, just four months after I started.

The really cool thing about bicycles is, as noted, they allow us busted up and sore older guys a chance at athleticism far into old age.

These are two Australian guys I met just south of Ennis MT this past summer, 72 years old, 55 days out from Yorktown VA., headed for Astoria OR... cool

100 friggin miles!!! That's impressive. Okay, serious question, how does your ass not hurt after 100 miles on that little seat? lol.

I have a Cannondale hardtail here in TX and a Jamis full suspension in CO. The hardtail is lighter and more nimble but the full suspension is a more pleasant ride. Both are a few years old so have 26” tires vs the newer 27.5 or 29. I like the disk brakes and agree with others stating that going with single drive up front simplifies shifting and eliminates the hassle of a front derailleur. Buying a bike is all about frame geometry first and then components. Settle on one that fits your build and then look for quality suspension etc. parts. Having shopped for bikes recently in TX I can tell you that demand has driven up the cost of used bikes and also cleared out most bike shops of their normal inventory. I guess with gyms closed and many people having spare time & cabin fever there have been a lot of bikes purchased.
