Thanks to the sharp eye of a fellow campfire member, I should have a Montana 270wsm on its way. My plan is to have it rebarreld to 6.5 PRC. Heres what Im thinking.

24", 1:8, fluted , threaded 9/16x24.

Whats the minimum barrel contour you guys would run??

Also, who would come highly recommended for this work?
Who's done these and any regrets?
Have a good one

+1 on dupe

All my Kimber work was done by Dave Bruno in PA or Kevin Weaver in CO.

Id like to run the thinnest od barrel recommended for 9/16 threading. Factory threading is 1/2" on the kimbers.

Think 1 size larger than factory would fit in the channel?

Looks like a #2B would meet the od for threading. Its .630
Think that would fit in without stock mods? Its a medium sporter contour.

You should be able to take some measurements on the factory tube and compare to the specs on your barrel maker's website. Or you could use the factory profile, with the taper stopping when the OD hits your .630" number.

I want to say member TDN (Tim) has done this as well as Kimber7man.

Shaen (Shooter71) comes highly recommended.

I've had the good fortune to shoot TDN's (Tim) gun and it's simply awesome. Shaen did the work and it's spectacular...so spectacular I talked him into selling it to me.

I had mine spun up with a Rock Creek 2 contour 8 twist. At 24” length the muzzle diameter is a bit under 0.60”. Maybe like 0.58 or 0.59 IIRC. Gunsmith didn’t have to do much reworking of the barrel channel, he did skim bed the action and lug.

I was thinking about taking it back and having him chop the barrel to 21” or maybe 20”, thread it 1/2x28 or maybe 9/16 if diameter allows. It’s an ugly mother but it shoots...

2b would require hogging the barrel channel out. A Bartlein 2b was my initial thought too, until I laid the barrel in the stock...

Could have a custom contour turned up to get a larger diameter for the muzzle threads

Here's a novel thought, why not test drive that 270WSM? It's a heck of a hunting cartridge.

My thought, too. Seems like a lot of work where I am not sure the 6.5 PRC offers much more than the .270 WSM.

I had one done by KS Arms here in AB that's a factory dupe to the end of the forearm, tapering to 0.600" diameter at 24".

This is my vote as well. Just about perfect for the WSM Montaba

The 2B is way larger than the factory contour....

Shaen can recontour the 2B to something closer to the factory contour. He’ll grumble (😎) but he is awesome to work with..
My 6.5 PRC he did shoots very well!

I already have a MT in 300 wsm...
So my entire purpose is to get a 6.5 with more snort than the creedmoor. I grew up with a 6.5x55 swede, and really like the wsm platform in the kimbers.
Looks like I might have to go a custom contour route?

KS arms sell barrels to smiths in the lower 48?
