Start.
Min or 2
Let it sit 4or 5
Check again.
Note difference in noggin per ruff idea of what is in system still versus on the stick that aint gone back to pan.
In the upper half of cross hatch on stick good
Low bottom on stick.
Add 4 or 5 oz check
Maybe add again depending


Everyone got different idiocencrancies on how they do it.


When I change oil
Run to thermostat opens .
Shut down
Drain oil
Rock vehicle with my body weight on plug side.
More oil drained.
Start engine for a slow count to 6
Shutdown dont give engine light or rough run a chance
At least another 1/2 to 3/4 quart drains out from oil syetem.
pouring out of drain plug again briefly
Filter comes off empty

New filter , drain plug install.
Add oil
5qt sump 99% of the time will take the real world full system 6 qts.

Been doing it for decades.
No ill effects on any vehicle I have had.
Have had some extremely high mileage vehicles.
One example
89 ranger with 280k on the odometer and the worm gear on the speedometer cable broke for the last 3 yrs I had it.

Yeah. I never heard of running an engine to check the oil!? You wait a couple minutes after it’s been running so the oil returns to the pan. Otherwise you’re gonna get a low reading, and if you add oil, you’re gonna overfill the level.

We used to tolerate a gallon a day consumption on large equipment.

Would have been roughly 10-15 percent.

That was for 10 to 12 hours though.


I guess you would have to check daily for a while until you had some idea on consumption.


After that its just luck on a pump motor.


At least you Missouri guys are gonna get water.

Long ago working on a rice farm and using diesel engines to run rice water irrigation wells, We checked the first thing every morning. Including Sundays. Those wells would run for a couple of months at a time, other than the shut down for checking the oil. miles

They run out of gasoline.

Not oil.

He puts gas in it he'll have a new set of problems.

On marine propulsion diesels in tugs, we used to check the oil every month or two. Changed it frequently though, usually every three or four years.

OK, car, pickup, I start, check for filter leak. Back off ramps, I might check it then.

A family friend worked on the AlCan Highway, he said they never shut the diesels off even for an oil change. One man replaced the drain plug, another man on top started pouring in the oil.

Probably didn't worry about a catch-pan for the oil either, just drain it out on the ground wherever they happened to be.

Very rough rule of thumb for 4-stroke gasoline outboard motors is that 100hrs = 10,000Mi in a car. Assuming you're running irrigation pump engines, they're probably not running @ 4k-6k RPM though.

If I had a motor that HAD to work remote on long intervals I'd probably add a 2nd oil filter and REALLY good air filtration.

Older diesels were made to be run continuously because they could be hard to start. More current diesels, about the time they got glow plugs, that are easier to start, not so much.


An engine can still have good oil pressure even if low on oil. Normally it will be fine but if you hit a hill, up or down, and the oil in the pan runs toward the end of the engine away from the pump/sump all of a sudden you have a problem. How bad a problem depends on how long you are on the incline. We had an MTU 12V4000 from one of the coal companies at work that spun two main bearings. The coal company hollering warranty. When the ECM got read it had something like 40+ incidents of low oil pressure in three days. The effect is accumulative. A little wear this time, a little the time before and a little the next time, it adds up. Warranty was denied

Depends on whether it's before and after you change the muffler belts and checked the blinker fluid.

You mean you aren't supposed to do that?

Check, add oil if needed and then go wherever you need to go.

I know for a fact the Triton V10 didn’t use oil or need oil changes.

Don't know, did not ask, they may have burned it for heat, it may have been a wee bit frosty at times?
