My little Nissan has 180,000, replaced 2 timing chains, done all maintenance. I live in Tennessee, it was built in Tennessee and has never left the state. Oh and it has a “Don’t Tread on Me” license plate, and a Glock decal, which easily adds 20HP. My 1997 Nissan got to 185000 miles before a little old lady from East Texas decided I didn't need it anymore and drove into my front fender, totaling my 14 year old but pristine little Nissan truck. Sad day. I had kept up with all maintenance. And that inline 4 and 5 speed manual we're nearly trouble free. The evaporator got leaves in at once and a sledgehammer mechanic busted the fitting for the upper radiator tank and I had to replace the radiator myself for the princely sum of 100usd. As for a 5000 to 7000 load, i woild still auggest a 3/4 ton gasser. I think ford offers a v8 without vvt and stop start cr p. I just think that you get so much more capability and safety with 3/4 ton vs 1/2 ton. And i woild not drag a 5000 lb trailer with a i4 nissan anywhere but a short flat easy distance.

How much and in what fashion will you be driving the truck when not pulling the camper? Short trips and/or long idles are a recipe for disaster in any diesel from any manufacturer from 2011 and newer as that's when they all added SCR/DEF to their DPF stream. Really, one could amend that to 2007 or newer as that's when the DPF cans were mandated and they're the source of the largest issues regarding short trips and/or long idles.
I can walk on water.......................but I do stagger a bit on alcohol.

Great learning here, much appreciated. I think I may go 1/2 ton and downsize on the camper. Like mentioned above, pretty sure I can get into the 5000# range and be fine. Bingo! Smaller units make the traveling & set up so much simpler IMO. Easier on the wallet too.

I’m a diesel- Cummins 3/4 ton fan. It will cover everything but the biggest RVs If you’re buying a tow vehicle, then do it right. 7k lb Empty for half ton is getting up there ... it’s really more about controlling and stopping the weight. Not just pulling it. 3/4 ton gasser guzzles gas. If you ever towed with a diesel vs gas , you’d understand. I know Nissan quit making the titan with the V8 Cummins. Maybe you can find a deal on those since they aren’t selling well ? But their pay load sucks from I hear. Nothing air bags can’t fix.
Old saying we have about glass, could be applied here as well, Buy once cry once

1/2 ton will do it, but it won’t be great. 3/4 ton would be a better choice. Flat lands, gas will be ok, mountains, get a diesel.

One must also consider whether or not their driving needs and habits when not towing are likely to lead to significant reliability woes. It's not just the $$.

Find a lightly used f-150 ecoboost Nice truck. Down the road though might need turbo work which is $$$$. A pre-owned F-150 XLT/Lariat can be a GREAT buy as long as you shop around. You can save 10s of thousands of dollars and still have a great truck. We just picked up a F-150 Lariat w/80k and the 3.5L Ecoboost for my son and didn't even bother getting an extended warranty. If something breaks, we'll fix it but I see a whole lot of these coming in with 150-225k miles and still going strong. The 5.0 V8 is also a great engine and I wouldn't hesitate buying one of those either.....

What about the 3.5 Eco with max tow package or a Chevy/GMC with 6.2? Is 7000# all those trucks want? Last I heard, the 6.2 gasser is only available in 1/2 ton chevy trucks. They put the lower HP 6.0 in the 3/4 and one tons. Even though the 6.0 produces less HP, it is better suited to pulling heavy loads. It is not just about peak HP. The 3/4 and one ton also have bigger brakes and springs which gives better stability and stopping power.

You don't need a diesel and all of the extra cost to buy it and maintain it to occasionally pull a camp trailer. I've pulled trailers through the Rockies and all over Nevada (the most mountainous state in the lower 48) with a 2500 HD gas truck with no problem whatsoever. If you were pulling extra heavy loads very often then yeah, a diesel would make sense, otherwise skip the smell, noise, hassle and expense.
