Have a 300rum I'm preparing to start working on a load for. Will be used on whitetail to elk. If you was to run 1 bullet, which one would you use? Leaning toward 190gr berger vld with retumbo as of now.

Load the 200 Accubond over Retumbo until your chronograph reads 3100 FPS.

Load the 200 Accubond over Retumbo until your chronograph reads 3100 FPS. Some sound advice right there. Load them as long as the factory magazine will allow. Probably a shade over 3.60”

Dumb question, why until chronograph reads 3100?

That seems to be the accuracy node for that particular combo.

Yep Retumbo and 200 Accubond! Ramshot Magnum works well also.

I prefer the 230 gr Berger hybrid target. High BC and will penetrate well, usually exiting, even in the largest bull elk with out destroying much meat.
Another choice would be the 215 Berger hybrid target. A bit flatter trajectory and good BC.
If you must use a lighter Berger use a hybrid rather than a VLD. Creating an accurate load will be easier. Hybrids are not as seating depth sensitive as VLDs.

Lots of good options but mine prefers 200gr AB’s over Retumbo for 3150fps.

ThomsonJ, If I wanted one 1) bullet for everything, especially if “larger” big game were on the menu.....it “would not” be a highly frangible bullet!!! At the velocities you will obtain, tissue damage/bloodshot meat will be excessive on “smaller” big game and you may experience inadequate penetration on “larger”, thicker-skinned, heavy boned “large” big game. If you “only” take broadside shots, and have very good bullet placement.....the “thin jacket” bullets will do fine. However, you may be very dissatisfied on a “raking” or misplaced shot! When I first started hunting “large” big game (elk, moose, bear), with a thin jacketed bullet at much lower velocities than you, the performance was at best....dismal! With the aforementioned broadside shot, death was near immediate, on a shot needing a long wound channel ......very poor results! Just my findings and opinion! memtb

Load the 200 Accubond over Retumbo until your chronograph reads 3100 FPS. This or RL 25 work up to 92.5 grains. Ramshot Magnums rox also. For my hunting use Bergers will not do.

I shoot the 180 AB at 3250 to 3300 with both IMR7828 and R-22. I have used several other powders also. My other load that sees some use is the 200 gr. partition and Ramshot Magnum.

Last two elk fell to the 180 AB. One at 420 yards and the other at 220. Both were quick kills with no tracking. Have also taken an elk with 168 E-tip. Took a small bear with the 200 Partition.

Only bullets I've shot was some factory loaded barnes ammo with 165 gr bullet. Harvested a bear with it, he didn't go 5'. I knew I wanted something a little heavier, but didn't want to go so heavy that the recoil becomes unpleasant and need a muzzle break

Not with a .300 RUM, but most of the elk that I have killed were with .30 caliber 180 grain bullets. I shot 7 elk with 180 grain Sierra GameKing bullets from my .30-06 and 21 elk and 2 bull moose with 180 grain Partitions from my .30 Gibbs. My last 2 bull elk were shot with a 168 grain TSX and a 168 grain TTSX bullet from my .300 Weatherby. The other elk that I've killed were with a .30-40 Krag (the only elk that I've shot with a factory cartridge), a .30-06 150 grain Hornady Spire Point bullet, an arrow, a 117 grain Sierra GameKing bullet from my .257 Ackley, and a 160 grain Accubond from my 7 mm RM. I shot all of those animals on DIY hunts, and most were on DIY solo hunts, and all were shot at less than 300 yards.
My current elk load is 180 grain TTSX bullets from my .300 Weatherby. I've never seen the need for any .30 caliber bullets heavier than 180 grains.

I shoot Berger 185 VLDs in my 300RUM over Reloader 25. Built mine so it has a 12 twist 28.5" barrel though. Every rifle is a different animal in my opinion. A load may hit a node in one rifle and not in another. Best to work up your own load. I am getting nearly 3400fps though.
God Bless, Louis

Load the 200 Accubond over Retumbo until your chronograph reads 3100 FPS. Some sound advice right there. Load them as long as the factory magazine will allow. Probably a shade over 3.60” Elk, Mule Deer and Antelope have all fallen to this recipe for me. 200 yds to 702 yds. Easy to load and consistent all day long.
Just because I am wandering around doesn't mean I am lost.
