Purchased two stocks for my pre 64 model 70 from an older gentleman that no longer had a need for them. One is an original wood stock and the other according to the man is a Mcmillian. He stated he bought the Mcmillian many years ago and couldn’t remember if it was for a standard or featherweight model.
I tried to put my standard 30-06 in the Mcmillian but from what I can tell it will need some fitting. Does anyone recommend a gunsmith that can do this type of work?

I typically use Kevin Weaver of Weaver Rifles to do Model 70 work.

You might post up some pictures and see if anyone wants to trade a standard for a fw stock ... it’s a long shot, but you never know. Might get lucky and save some money and time.

If it is simply opening the barrel channel from featherweight to standard profile, McMillan can do it for you. After I shot out my featherweight barrel I had them open mine up for a Rock No. 2 replacement and repaint it. Cost was very reasonable as I recall and it took about a month. They are local for me, which made it easy, but worth a phone call.
Too close for irons, switching to scope...

After some doing some research it appears the Mcmillian stock I have is for a standard weight pre 64. There is a notch in the barrel channel for the band/forearm screw. Only there is no hole drilled through for the forearm screw. Barrel channel seems fine but the rear tang doesn’t seat down flush into the stock. I believe the barreled action is binding between the recoil lug and the magazine box. I appreciate the information.
Also wanted to add that I would sell the wood stock if anyone is interested. Believe it to be all original off of an earlier model pre 64 than the one I have. It has a metal butt pad, metal d ring sling swivels and a straighter stock without what I would call a check riser. Can text or email pictures if anyone is interested.

The Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 Standard Model rifles are to be found in two differing stock ACTION inletting configurations. The early style of action with rear tang dubbed "cloverleaf" You can reference myriad quality photos of such at the below source which I found by Googling (and knowing what I was seeking). https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...tthread/Board/71/main/876016/type/threadIn late forties, Winchester reconfigured the Model 70 action tang. The "early" tang compatible stocks and latter ones will not interchange! The aside noting that the Featherweight, arriving in early fifties, were all latter tang configuration by intro date default. Hope this info helps! Good luck & Best! John.
