Contemplating placing my 12 X Lyman STS on a Shiloh Sharps 45-70 Govt 30 in No 1 Sporter. 30 in bbl. Only concern is 12X seems a might high magnification. That and it will not be able to be used -unless the scope is off. for anything else --Long range target 500-900 yd ranges. Thoughts?
Thanks-

For that yardage, it's not too high on magnification. May need some tuning on the mounts though to have any adjustments at that range.

Call Steve Baldwin in Oklahoma and tell him what you want to do, order one of his tang and front sights, you wont be a able to even see your target in a 12X at those ranges due to holdover, as 1minute said, even if you plan to spin turrets, there's not enough mil/moa's in a modern scope.

Or, get a shorter period scope like the Montana Vintage Arms B5, or their longer scopes You could also get one of the DZ Unertl types with extra elevation range. I don't know the maximum practical range of these. Easily 600 yards, but beyond that? MVA or Dan Zimmerman could advise. There is also going to be a point at which you are going to be looking at your barrel when the rear of the scope is elevated.
There is just going to be a practical range limit with these externally adjusted vintage scopes.

I think I plan to abandon this Lyman to a pre-64 M-70-makes more sense.
Meanwhile, I will move my Axtell tang sight to where it belongs.
