The New York Police Department (NYPD) has reportedly limited the number of retirement applications it will allow, after it saw a surge in requests in the last couple of months.

The NYPD announced on Wednesday that 179 officers filed for retirement between 29 June and 6 July – a 411 per cent increase on the 35 who retired in the same time period in 2019.

Additionally, 503 NYPD officers filed for retirement between 25 May - the day George Floyd was killed while in police custody in Minneapolis - and 3 July, representing a 75 per cent increase on the 287 officers who retired in the same period last year.

Simple solution, go see the doctor and have them advise immediate medical retirement due to extreme stress and PTSD. My bet is they won't be willing to risk the lawsuit by negating medical advice.

Those numbers are far smaller than the ones I heard on Hannity's show.

So they have met requirements for retirement and are prevented from doing so?

I'd say they need some lowyers.

I went through much the same when I wanted to retire. There were a ton of guys all putting in at the same time. They’ll tell you that you can retire, but you won’t be paid till they’ve caught up with the applications/paperwork.

Where the hell is the damn union???

You can’t stop them unless it was written somewhere in the contract that they couldn’t.

Grievances needed to be filed pronto if they can do that.

This is something that warrants a walk out IMO.

DeBlasio, what a fruitcake. When he was running for President a year ago, at a debate he talked about how terrible it was for his son, considering Mom is a Negro.
And he had to tell his son that the biggest danger he faced was being shot by a racist cop.

Of course that is not true, the biggest threat for a young black man in New York, far and away, is another young black man.

And this guy is personally in charge of NY Police Dept. How would you like to work for a sh*thead like this. No wonder morale is rock bottom.

Even more fitting, have all of them stay home, claim they have COVID symptoms, and they need a 2 week quarantine.

That's not what I got when I read the entire article.

First it's Yahoo News, and the headline does not match the content. Surprise.

Quote
“Apparently, the pension section is only taking a certain amount of people per day and I think they are backed up till late July, early August,” one officer said. “That’s why you don’t see like 100 a day, because they are only doing like 35 to 40 a day, by appointment.”

The department is not turning down applications from people retiring in the next 30 days, but has told other officers to wait another month before applying, due to the increased demand.

So, by reading the article we see that the NYPD UNION is not "preventing" retirements, they have just limited the number per day.

Unions don't get to pick and choose which cases they will pursue, at least not arbitrarily. They have a legal obligation called the Duty of Fair Representation. If they deliberately fail to diligently represent an employee, they can be sued.

In times past a union might not push an employee's grievance if they thought said employee was an a-hole. That changed, and I have seen them push a grievance even though the union rep clearly didn't want to. "I know he's an a-hole, Paul, but I have to represent him with his grievance."

RemMod8: Here is the BIG difference in your military service and the law enforcement officers service!
The military's top officials and the commander in chief were NOT undermining, backstabbing, insulting, working against and treating YOU like schit!
The law enforcement officers have to deal with the dangers and all of the mentioned above detrimental and stressful circumstances all the while dealing as best they can with the backstabbing leadership, mayors, city councils and chiefs - constantly for 25 years - minimum!
BIG difference that.
In fact I doubt if YOU could do your "25" in the military if the above detrimental circumstances were in effect for you!
I know of what I speak.
The law enforcement officers of new york city and all the demonrat led cities in America deserve better - MUCH better, than what they have been dealt.
If you are so tough march right on down to your nearest demonrat led large city and sign up for law enforcement work!
Somehow I doubt you will, or could, do so.

To the elected officials.

I wonder how motivated the union is to help them retire, knowing they will be losing dues-paying members.

This is one way to defund and is part of the plan, I’d surmise. Don’t backfill vacancies as they occur and there’s your defunding in action.

Wonder why they don't call in sick and go get some counseling for work related stress and charge it to Worker Comp.

This is the way to do it as another here mentioned. After the workers comp expires file SS Disability.

There’s plenty that will do this. The system shafted them and they’ll shaft the system,

If I was one they screwed over and wouldn't let retire, I'd do just enough not to get fired and find me a doctor that feels terrible about my new possible heart, back, neck, PTSD, etc., condition. By that time in your career, you know just what to do to stay off the carpet and you know where all the good hiding spots are.

NYPD - 36,000 officers, and 19,000 civilian employees.

I think they can absorb these retirements.

Watch the news clips of Noo Yawk rioters vandalizing and defacing stuff- - - - - -a large number of the cops that are standing around doing nothing are wearing white shirts. Those people are supervisors. Apparently they don't trust the foot soldiers to toe the line and let the mob do their thing.

Probably a lot more junior officers who are not eligible to retire, are just quitting.

I'd love to see a federal program that would cover moving expenses and a short term income supplement for first responders of all types, cops, EMT's and firefighters, who want to relocate to places where their skills would be appreciated by the people they serve. There would be a mass exodus from the leftist cities that just might prompt the citizens to elect some people with a little common sense. If not, fugg 'em!

Oh yes, they will find people with some sort of social work or psychology degree to go out and do soft empty hand negotiations. And really bad stuff is going to start happening in places where urban and suburban whites live as they become prey due to their non self reliance when it comes to defense against said predators.

So they retire and they get both a pension and social security. Since they pay social security their pension is not considered a windfall. They paid 2.5% in and the city 5%.

If they don't let them retire the officers will simply retire in place (RIP) No more proactive police work. In just a few weeks New York will be a $hit hole and it will be time to send in Snake Pliskin.
