To be fair:
It is possible for a gun to have been carried many miles by a hunter, with the expected external wear and tear, yet have only a few rounds fired. "A couple of boxes of shells".
OTOH, a gun may look pristine, but have thousands of rounds fired by a non or seldom hunting range rat.
Ideally you should be able to ascertain a used gun's history, but that's not always possible.
Caveat emptor.

Absolutely true, of course, but I understand this thread to just be poking light-hearted fun at common sayings. For example, most my my rifles are range toys with over 15,000 rounds through them and have little or no rifling in the first 8" of the bore, but judging from external appearances they "look unfired" or at the worst have "honest wear". Hmm, hope no one remembers I said that when I go to sell one...

Don't know if it classifies as a cliche or not, but my pet peeve is "pill". IMO nothing says kick me I am stupid, as quickly as calling bullets pills. I have actually walked away from a purchase deal in progress when the prospective seller said he "fed" it such-and-such "pills". That is so unbelievably stupid I consider it insulting.

It always amazes me that the seller should think that the buyer gives a hoot about what the seller has in an item - especially when the seller wants to build "sweat equity" into the price.

Point Blank. It's usually used as a drama enhancer by the media.

Well, no [bleep], lady. It's a .357" Magnum. PBR on a human could be 100 yards. This one is my pet peeve. It pisses me off every time. Point blank range is the range at which the bullet hits approximate to point of aim. If I sight in a 6.5-300 WBY, at 400yds, 410 yds is still PBR.
I belong on eroding granite, among the pines.
