If a kid dies doing something they love, who is it a tragedy for? The kid? Hardly. Snuffed our having a blast before the cares of the world ruin everything, beats living a long life trying to live forever and dying in a bed in pain or out of your mind. The older I get, the more I realize, we all die, what we ought to worry about is how we live.
Been driving up to visit my 90 year old grandfather every week, he is in the hospital with severe back troubles from a lifetime of hard work. You know what he told me this week? Told me to enjoy something every day, because you never know if you will get another one. Everything that man has ever told me was right, and it seems to me he is still on a roll.
Horses, motorcycles, guns, swimming, none of it is safe. All of them are central to a whole lot of my best memories. To skip all that would have left life a lot less lived, and much more endured. That picture is beautiful in many ways, not least in its capture of a child and her magnificent companion engaged in an intense effort. Beats the hell out of seeing some fat kid staring into a phone...
