If you have a real problem, I have the small Winchester SN booklet. Need the complete S/N for it to be valid. Many were made in the early 1900s and teens...
You don't by chance have a climbing left side receiver sight-Lyman 21?

I have owned about 6 or 8 1895 rifles: 30 Army, 30-03, 35 Win, & 405.
Killed my first bull elk near Mt. Evans, CO. decades ago with a special order TD 1895 in 405. Wish I still had it

I have this unfired Miroku/Winchester 1895 Deluxe .405 WCF safe queen if you REALLY want another 1895 .405. It is shiny and purty!

The 1895 was a good rifle and accounted for a lot of game in Alaska and Africa, as well as the inter-mountain West US.
To get an accurate readout, you need the full serial number. I think your rifle was late teens or early twenties.
I have 5 smokeless 1886 rifles from the early 1900s-all nickel steel.
Smokeless was the way to go early on. The very early 1895s like the 40-82 could use either powder.

Shelton-does your 1895 have -no extra safety? Just the hammer like John Browning intended?

OOpsie!
All my Miroku/Winchesters have the tang safety which for a shooter of double guns is fine as my thumbs can handle the safety shooting left or right handed.
When hunting Cape Buff in RSA with my 1895 .405 Shooter, I put it on Fire with the hammer down as we exited the truck and began hunting. AS things became interesting, the hammer came back as the rifle went up on the shooting sticks- from then on it was muscle memory.
