From: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-53656220Officials are blaming highly explosive materials stored in a warehouse for six years. President Michel Aoun tweeted it was "unacceptable" that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored unsafely. Bruce

The orange cloud looked typical of nitrous oxide generated from ammonium nitrate, nitric acid.
WTF storing munitions at a port long term!
I was in Dar Es Salaam in 2011 when the munitions dump went up (for the third time!) out near the airport. From a distance the air blast was impressive, but nothing like that Beirut blast would have been.

Stored that much ammonium nitrate for 6 years in a Port zone with lots of traffic? Sounds legit.
Yup.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the fire was set, or deliberate. Having that much highly explosive material in one place just has to be tempting to the opposition..

2750 tons of explosives? That's about 15% of the Hiroshima bomb.
Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

That secondary was impressive. I just consider it more paybacks for our Marine barracks bombing, even almost 40 years later

2750 tons of explosives? That's about 15% of the Hiroshima bomb. Or 270 MOAB bombs. Three kiloton explosion. In a major population center just WOW. There are a bunch of Muzzies would like to accomplish same in a few western cities.

Thatβs a concrete silo. It may be standing now, but I bet thereβs enough structural damage we donβt see and theyβll have to tear it down.

I just read that it appears to have been many tons of agricultural fertilizer that were stored in a warehouse there. If so, was it old fertilizer that became unstable or did it have some help igniting?
