A few of us on another forum here have committed to hunting with the 32-40 this fall, and started a thread over on Hunting Rifles. I'd like to encourage my Savage brothers to break out the oldies this fall and join in. Any old cartridges are fine, we're just having fun with old rifles. I hope to get something with an 1899B 32-40, or maybe the 38-55. It's going to be hard leaving the beloved .284 home since I hunt the open country more often than not. Might have to change tactics and revert to stealth mode. Feel free to chime in on your preparations for the hunt and the hunt itself.

A 38-55 is cool any day of the week. But didn't you post on a 38-55 a few years back? I can't remember if it was a 38-55 or 375 you had, but the latter is pretty darn close to the former. At least close enough for purposes of reloading to 38-55 specs.

It’s not a Savage, but I plan on chasing PA and NY bucks this year with an 1895 Chilean Mauser chambered for the 7x57 Mauser.

Yeah I've got a 38-55 and a 375 or two. The idea is to break out the oldies and hunt them this fall. A 22HP or 25-35 would work too!

That's almost cheating.

It's a period cartridge but I don't think I'd call the 7x57 obsolete. Just buried under piles of other cartridges that were produced purely for purposes of marketing. Getting back on topic, well sort of, I've been Jonesing for a 38-55 High Wall.

I have already been doing that for several years. You long range shooters are in for a surprise. I have used the 303, 32-40, 250-3000, (who hasn't) 25-35 (not impressed) and 38-55. No Anticost Hunt this year because of political 19. I doubt very seriously if I hunt this year. I have an opportunity to chase bear with hounds again and my wife wants to give it a whirl, so well wait and see.

I plan on hunting Whitetails this year with a Model 7 in .350 Rem Mag.
Since there is no longer factory ammo loaded for it is it an obsolete catridge?...I would tend to think so. Guess the term obsolete is in the beholder.

So I'd say the 303 Savage is more "obsolete" than the 32-40. When was the last time any manufacturer made a new rifle chambered in 303 Savage? Lot longer than the 32-40.

my plan is to use this year a 1953 model 70 Winchester 30-06 i inherited from a great old friend who passed a few years ago, which i plan on using this fine old rifle ,with some grand old 30-06 cartridges and some old 40 year old Nosler Partition bullets that another great old friend gave me before he passed ,to bear hunt in northern Minnesota. i know its not obsolete but its all grand older things that will together and my handloading make it go BANG ! maybe even kill a black bear too ?

I am planning on hunting my 1899F in .25-35 this fall.

plan on doing some hunting with a 303 with iron sights.

i am using my G 30-30 even though many don't consider the 30-30 obsolete , many do.

I'm all for it!
I think of it as adding challenge to the hunt.
May need to hunt in closer and/or be shot selective. Now that's hunt'in!

In another few years, anything that's not 6.5 CM will be considered obsolete.




I started doing that last year. Took a pronghorn with a 99F 308 Win, and a whitetail doe with a 99F 250 Sav. Bought the 250 Sav from Roy, coincidentally. Looking to do the same with another 99F 308 Win on a muley buck in Wyoming shortly.

I'm not sure if a .308 could be considered obsolete.

When were the last regular production, not commemorative, rifles in .303 Savage and 32-40 cataloged?

I plan to punch tags in Nebraska with rifles chambered in 22-250, 25 WSSM, 6.5 CM, 30-30, and 338 FED. No Savages, but the 22-250 has a rechambered barrel from a Stevens 200. If I travel back east to hunt deer near my old camp in Groton, NH, it will be with a rifle chambered in 30-06 that is cached with friends in Etna, NH, either a Savage 110 DL that I bought from Diamondjim back in 2012 or a Remington 760 BDL with the basketweave "checkering".
