Years ago a co-worker that was born and raised in Buffalo always spoke of beef on weck sandwiches. He would tear them up when he would visit his parents. Beef on weck is truly delicious. Charlie the Butcher or Andersons (get some soft serve ice cream if you go). Thanks for the memories...

All of my extended family is from Iowa and hot beef sandwiches are a staple in every diner, dive and drive in and truck stop in the state.

Hot beef sandwiches come from Chicago (dry, dipped or soaked with hot and/or sweet peppers) or as pit beef from Baltimore.
Certainly not ground round. Those are called Italian Beefs. They are not the same as an open face hot beef sandwich. Didn't you post a recipe for Italian beef quite a while back Flave? If it was you we still use it to this day....AWESOME!!!
