Took a while to find the shop the missus and I have used for nigh on 15 years. Not the cheapest, but smart & honest.

Points taken! But I rank mechanics right up there. I'd say there's more honest journalists and lawyers than there are mechanics though.

For those in the Atlanta area, Mike at Major Service Center in Powder Springs is about as honest as you get AND has reasonable prices.

As far as boat mechanics go, Don Weed at European Marine in Greenville, SC is a good as it gets for Mercury Outboards. He is as honest as they come just like Mike above.

In addition to those above listed above, HVAC guys can be bad. I bought a house and 6 months later the heat would not work. The burner would fire up then immediately shutdown. Since I was new to the area, I just picked a company with good Google reviews. He came out and said the whole unit needed replaced to the tune of $7000. I said, I need a second opinion. I knew my neighbor did HVAC on a commercial level...ie hospitals, office buildings etc. He checked it out and it was a high temperature sensor was bad. $35 later it was fixed. I bought said neighbor a bottle of GOOD bourbon for his troubles.

I asked around for a local shop here to get my youngest son’s car fixed, and got one highly recommended so I went there. The guy did the work needed and I also asked the guy to do a brake inspection for me. That didn’t happen, and he told me they were good to go. The issue still existed so I tried to look at then myself. The darn drum wouldn’t come off the shoes had worn into them so bad. I ended up going to Midas and paid them $560 to fix it and they found another issue as well, and said the brakes were so worn they should subs been replaced a while ago.
My oldest son who is a gear head and a helicopter mechanic in the Army NG, was going to make appointment with the same guy to work on his AC in his truck. After talking to him, my son didn’t make the appointment as the stuff the guy told my son was a load of crap, my son said. Sad thing is, I wonder how many other people had the experiences like that with him.
I’ve had better luck and cheaper repairs at the Dodge dealership than most independent repair shops here.

I don't trust anyone to do anything for me, especially on motor vehicles and most things around the house.

My theory is I will have more pride in my work and shoot for perfection, if I don't achieve perfection I can only b ! tch about myself.

I have been beaten though, even with the FSM I could not diagnose my daughter's CVT issues in her Altima not having the software available to the dealership techs.

With the information on the internet a lot can be accomplished on our own.

Do you get paid for turning wrenches in a garage? Do you own or run a car repair shop?

The place where we buy tires does mechanical work. We deal with them because they are honest. My wife recommends them to single women because they won't get cheated there.

I did work as a paid mechanic at one time and have worked on other people's vehicles in my own shop.
