Anybody that would run a payday lending outfit would sell crack to an expectant mother.

"Hey, it's her choice!"

"maybe I can refer her to my buddy running an abortion mill on the corner!"

The money is all the same color right?

Several of my old concrete buddies would get an advance from the boss.

Same dudes. Good workers most of the time but went wild every weekend.

Boss probably dinged 'em here and there.

Only place I ever saw them were in Military towns (Norfolk) and I knew way back then that they were predatory lenders. And being young and dumb I spent all my money from check to check but I wasn't dumb enough to fall for that kind of scam. All kinds of that crap going on in that setting. Those and buy here pay here car dealerships. This was a very long time ago but the only experience I have with it.

Hell there aren't even any pawn shops that I know of within 75 miles of where I live now.

I'll also admit to using one once when i was young. I was trying to hold onto a job I really wanted one time. Economy was falling so it got pretty lean around the house. Got to the point i could fill the gas tank or have food for the week but not both. I paid it immediately after my next paycheck and ate noodles all week.

That's a problem? How? it sounds to me like a good business model which must be offering a needed service to their customer base or they wouldn't continue to "come back again and again."

I don't know a lot about 'em, but I do believe they must serve a population which couldn't otherwise get a needed service anywhere else.

Seems to me there's a whole lot of other businesses which we could pass a morality judgment on too. How about strip clubs? Or bars in general? How many people have a "few" drinks and get behind the wheel? Go home and kick the dog, maybe the ol' lady and kids too?

Given the answers anytime the question of hoarding comes up, I would say that 'fire's opinion would be "Salt of the Earth, Shrewd Businessmen".

I loan to my guys all the time. Let them pay it off any terms they want. No interest. Drives me nuts but what do you do.
Most drink and smoke, all have smart phones, eat out lunch every day rather than pack, buy coffee instead of bringing a thermos from home etc.... most of the borrowers won't work overtime either. Pisses me off.

It's a crazy lifestyle but when you're 20-30 years old...who cares!

But...

You get to be about 30 and you better have your money figured out or you're gonna be hurting when you're old.

That said my wife and I use our credit card for almost all bills and purchases.

I'll write an actual check for a 'large' local purchase or bill but pretty much everything else, credit card.

My neighbor set me up loaning money to some county employees who only get paid twice a month. Had a good gig working for years till he quit and started collecting disability. I charged 10% on the loan and 5% to cash their county checks every other Thursday. The best deal ever for us was holding paper on our first house, sold it 3 times before someone could afford to pay for it.

20+ years ago a buddy of my cousins had a framing company and sold pills and weed on the side. He would front his guys pot and pills through the week and do advances.. He said lot of times they would come for their check and he'd tell them they owed him $100 after framing full time for a week.

I hate writing checks. So many people sit on them forever before cashing them. I remember using checks for everything and getting the bank statement in the mail with the photocopies of the checks you'd written. And I'm not even fugking old!

FYI, paying with a debit card is risky business. A bank isn't responsible for loss or fraud with a debit card, like they are with a credit card. Most banks will help you out but their not required to, it's a courtesy.

Didn't need it per se, had enough gas to get back to the bunkhouse. I was a young pup and had no idea what those places even were, just saw a sign they cashed checks and I needed some beer money. If it hadn't been there I'd have been just fine lol. Just would've drank less and been the boring sober one for a change.

Making money isn't a bad thing, gouging someone in a bind is a little much. From what I see nobody is selling ammo at a 10% markup.
