I recently inherited my dads ruger #1 B In 300 WM. With 26” barrel .
I’d like to develop and shoot some heavier loads with it, thinking 190-210 grain bullets, that are some what affordable and can be used on game but good on paper. Thinking Sierra game King or similar.
Currently I really like RamShot powder In my other rifles (big game /hunter/tac) as it meters like water.
At this time, I don’t have dies, powder, primers or bullets. While I know it’s bad time, I’m starting to look and research some stuff to be ready to b uy when all this panic is over.

i have loaded for several 300 win mag bolt action. re-22 and 210 berger . norma or nosler brass. there is a thread somewhere . number one can be finnicky to load for..

re- 26 is another good powder.

RL 22 and 200 AB.

Rl-22 and 180 NPT'S work damn nice in pushfeed m70. Mb

RL-22 and 180 Nosler ballistic tips or 190 Sierra match kings work for me.

My rifle really likes 77.3 gr/RL26 with 200 gr Accubonds. I simply let the rifle tell me which bullet to use; it doesn’t like lighter bullets nor the 200 gr Partition. When it shot little bitty groups with the above load (from a 24” barrel) at 3000 fps, I stopped searching. That’s all I feed it, and it’s killed a pretty good variety of stuff with that load.

I keep reading that 26 and maybe even 22 are not very temp stablE. Should I be concerned?

I wouldn’t be concerned with 26. I use it here in Va all Summer and hunt in Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, etc in Oct/Nov. never had a POI shift with it yet while checking zero.

That’s my experience as well, in three calibers. Don’t worry about RL26.

What are you going to hunt with it?

I use 165 Barnes in mine for deer, pigs and pesky Aoudads.

Classic load that works, my go to in the .300 Win Mag.

Except I'm moving towards RL-23, away from RL-22 Similar performance, better powder.

Im using up my current RL-22 supply, replacing it with RL-23...

I like RL-26, hard to beat combo, 160 NAB in the 7RM. Haven't used it in the .300 Win Mag.

Seems the issue I'm hearing with '26 is max loads when it gets really hot, like 100*+. I haven't seen it, but don't shoot when it's that hot. From what I hear and read, fairly stable in the cold. Others may want to chime in. It may not the the most temp stable, but for sure, isn't the worst.

It would be elk.
My dad bought it when I was in high school for my elk gun. 20+ years ago..
After I moved away he used it couple times but no blood on it.
Would like to get some blood on it for him.
I also got his main elk rifle Ruger 77 tang in 06. I’ll have to take that one out as well one of these days.

H4831 is a good one. But probably no better or worse than all the others mentioned.

if this is your first No1, read about them on the single shot forum and other online sources.

I have found that in addition to being the most elegant rifle a normal guy can afford, they are also the most difficult to get to shoot accurately. I find they bounce funny on the sandbags so must be tested and zeroed by holding them tight with you hand between the forend and the sandbag. I can can only rarely get the average groups a bolt action or especially even a cheap AR-15 will get with no work at all except good bullets.

You'll read about relieving, floating and bedding the forend, removing material from the quarter rib (does the No1B have that?), stuff like that. Stuff I don't have the attention span to do.

For elk I wouldn't worry about R22 & R26. When I had issues my ammo was over 100 degrees and my load was already too hot, this with R26. R22 may suffer some on the cold end of the spectrum but I have not taken a longer shot using it in colder weather. At about 9 degrees and at 175 yds. I could tell no difference in point of aim.

But if I was just now getting components I would start with the newer more stable powders, R23, 7977, all the Enduron powders, Hodgedon Extreme, and the Ram Shot powders. The Ramshot is not temperature stable but the effects are minimal and linear so not a problem over normal ranges.

A late reply but availability will determine what you can load for. Best to find a friend that has supply.

These were my test loads with Hunter

SPS has 30 cal 200 gr Nosler partitions blems right now for $ 25/ 50. Git your credit card in gear. Good for whatever needs 300 win killing.
