Not real sure. 1899A Short Rifle (can't get a feel for barrel weight in pics) special order takedown and butt treatment? Anyway you cut it, I would love that rifle if it were mine. And I would hug it, and pet it, and I would name him George. (Points to whom can name where I stole that from!)

Murrays says model not available with a takedown til 1917. Don't know if that means it was available special order before that or never, not at all until 1917. Searching Royals book about now too.

Short rifle
Something funky with the fit of that butt plate.
Cool gun in my favorite Winchester caliber though...

What Loggah said. I personally found it odd that you would buy a rifle without any idea what it is, not recognizing the special order butt plate, and then not digging into the "what is it". How long have you had it?

Okay, I'll play.....Daffy Duck/Bugs Bunny and the Abominable snowman. I'm not much into '99 minutiae, but that's a cool old rifle I would treasure..

How long have you had it? I've had it a year or so. It's been in the safe in a case, out of sight out of mind. In the last year I've moved and been developing our new property so have been heavily pre-occupied. I knew it had condition and rarity in 32-40 so I grabbed it. I suppose that's understandable? Found it yesterday when I was taking photos of a 110 243 and a DE for a couple guys here. I could easily have forgotten it for another year but for that.

That 'toon was actually loosely based on Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men". As noted in my first post, I thought that's what the gun is, but didn't want to state it categorically.

Murray's is wrong on that. 1899A SR's were available in takedown from June, 1906 when it was introduced through 1920. The 1899H takedown they delayed for several years after it was introduced, but the 1899A/1899A SR were right away.

That sure is a great caliber to have a 99 in. Doesn’t matter what model, it’s a beauty. 👍👍

What looks off to you about it? The fit looks a little off. I don't have it in hand only the pictures which could be deceiving. Does the butt plate number match the stock? Can you feel any edges with your finger around the butt plate or wood? Might be nothing. Super cool gun regardless.

Might be nothing. Super cool gun regardless. Mine here, also on an SR. Solid frame SR tho.
