I know INGWE is the subject matter expert by being a long time reader of this wonderful forum. Would like to hear from him or anybody with real world experience on a sound factory deer hunting round that will stabilize out of a 1-12 twist Remington 700.

Thanks for your time, Joe

The Winchester factory load with the 64 grain Power Point has worked in a 1-12 for my dad. He has killed truck loads of feral hogs with that load off the back porch of his house.

Not Ingwe, but I did ask that same question a few years ago and Ingwe recommended Hornady 55gr soft points. I bought 'em and did shoot a doe while coyote hunting. Worked great.

What others have said...the Hornady 55 gr Soft Point works, the Winchester PP 64 grain works, the Federal 62 grain Fusion works. Also look at self defense ammo with bonded bullets around 55 grains...that'll work.

Said many times on here that 55 gr. Soft Point will put a hole in a woodchuck you can stick your fist into. Put that same hole behind a deers shoulder and magic ensues.

Thank you all for your insight and advice. As I guess I already new, any well constructed bullet, well placed , will do the job. I was wondering about the 62 gr fusions and if they would stabilize in 1-12 and that was answered.

Thanks again for you time, Joe

Never shot a deer with the Fusions but have shot coyotes and even groundhogs. With the damage it did to them I would have NO hesitation putting one behind a deers shoulder.

Deer do NOT like 55gr bullets. My kids raise hell on deer with them.

Have access to some 50gr tipped tsx loaded ammo, anybody ever use this out of 1-12 twist? Opinions on it as a deer round? First hand experience?

Thanks, Joe

I was told that a slow twisted 223 would like Sierra 63 grainers.
I am now working up a load with them for my R#3 and they are shooting just fine with Varget.
Have not shot a deer with that bullet yet though.

While not a 223, I watched a boy shoot a mule deer with a 22/250 with 55gr soft points once and the damage was devastating in the chest cavity. He waited for the turn sideways look back mule deer are known for. I had my eyes opened that day about how much damage those could do. I was convinced prior to that a 22/250 was a varmint rifle only.

I am also shooting a R#3 in 223. Been working around several different loads. What does your load look like for the 63 grain? I have been trying to get it to like the 64 grain Power Points.

That 63 gr. Sierra SMP is a fine deer bullet, and designed "short fat" for twists unto 14"

The 63 gr Sierra in my R#3 223 shoots well seated at approximately one caliber (.140" jump) and 26 grs or Varget.

As always, each gun is a little different, so work up loads carefully.

I hope to get that bullet field tested this fall. The boxes of bullets I located were so old that they were marked $3.35.
Since they work for me, they probably quit making them.

Tim

I never shot the Fusions in my 1/12 SPS 223. It was terribly inaccurate with 60 grain Partitions. My grandson's cheap Rossi single shot 223 1/12 shot the Partitions and the Fusions very well. He piled up the deer with them. Both those bullets normally provide pass through with the innards jellied up pretty good. If the Fusion will stabilize, the bullet is hard to beat.
