Is it possible to tape a barrel to the point where it becomes dangerous from pressure? Keeping water out of a barrel is almost a non-issue here as hunting season is usually dry but dirt is another issue. I've seen guys with duct tape around the muzzle which seems like extreme overkill.

I really don't believe that that tape exists.

I guess it would depend upon the type of tape and how many layers thick! I suspect that the barrel in most firearms (rifles/handguns) is capable of containing several thousand psi.....it would take a fairly substantial amount of tape to generate that much back-pressure. memtb .

I use elecrtical tape to keep dust, mud, snow, rain or moisture from dew in high grass out. I hate seeing a big, reddish brown rust rust scale in the edge of the rifle muzzle. I

3M Super 33+ so that it'll work in the cold too. A friend of mine uses finger cots and tapes the end in place after they're rolled out.

Finger coits work well to keep debris out of a gun barrel- - - - -or as condoms for liberals, if they use the smaller ones!

I used to only tape the muzzle when rain was in the forecast. But the last few years I just put some tape over the muzzle when hunting season starts and remove at the end or replace it after taking a shot. I see no downside. I've taken a few falls in the past when hunting and it is always possible to get debris in the barrel when walking through thick brush, tall grass, etc.
I've experimented with it enough at the range to be satisfied that it doesn't change POI. I use black electrical tape.

Rock Chuck: I use the little black balloons that are made and sold for the purpose of keep moisture, dirt and bugs out of ones Rifle barrel. They easily are pushed away by barrel gases at the moment of cartridge ignition. They work for me - I have never resorted to tape. Good luck with whichever you choose. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Never an issue with rifles. Shotguns may be more problematic, as there are numerous verified stories of shotgun barrels bursting due to even small obstructions.

Id venture to say if your rifle muzzle isnt covered, all but the least bump of it against a vehicle carpet or a swing through weeds or high grass will result in dirt particles flying up into the rifling inside the muzzle. They can easily be seen shining a light into the muzzle or even from overhead sunlight if outdoors.
