Can never end well IMO.

I was taught that it was best not to borrow things or to lend my things out.

If any of remember the cartoon Andy Capp!!!
FLO: Andy the neighbor wants to borrow the can opener.
ANDY: I'm using it to cut linoleum.
FLO: you can't cut linoleum with a can opener.
ANDY: you can do anything you want with it when you don't want to lend it!!!

My Dad didn't leave me with many sayings, but he did say "don't borrow anything, ever." His view was that something will happen to it and you will end up buying one anyway. Only then it will belong to the guy that you borrowed it from to start with. Applies to everything from a hammer to a truck...

Depends on the item. My neighbor pays in good beer so he gets a free pass.

Neighbor says, Hey can I borrow a long tape measure? Sure. No problem. Few days later, Hey, where's my tape? Oh, I put it back in your trailer. (work trailer). Nope, not there. Wife spots it leaning against this wood pile a few days later. I ask again. I specifically remember putting it back in your trailer. No, it's leaning against your woodpile. Huh, I thought I put it back. In my best Bristoe, "Harrumph" He does bring the Bobcat back after using it, which is nice.

I live out in the country and have no issue loaning some things. Depends on the item and the 'neighbor' though. Most I'd lend basic tools and such to. There's a couple that can borrow my tractor anytime they need it and they'll return the favor. There's one I won't lend anything to.

My [one]neighbor and I have a very good relationship and borrow each others 'stuff' regularly.
The only item that I've ever noticed his being squeamish about is his Sthil concrete saw[understandably on my part]. When I mentioned that I might just go buy my own he was adamant not to though.
During one winter[Obama era] and about his only way to make money with his dumptruck was selling firewood and his splitter died, I took mine and left at his place, took my firewood there to split.
Between the two of us there isn't much that one of us doesn't have and we both know that the other respects it when borrowed.
We also keep each others favorite beer in our fridge.

That's a great relationship. You sound like my kind of neighbor.

I have been asked less than 4 times by neighbors to borrow stuff but for one neighbor and I have gotten free legal advice from him so I don't mind. One neighbor has as much stuff as I do and the rest seem to just pay people to do stuff for him.

The good people leave you alone. Either that or they're ax murderers and they're enlarging their basement for your entire family.

I have a couple of neighbors that loan me items, and I return the favor. For us, this has worked out well. I have family I wouldn’t loan anything to,
