First trip of the season went well. I took four people, most of them college kids from the neighborhood. Yeah they are really good. I don't find them but once every few years. This was in the Coast Range not far from your old stomping grounds.

Or Coast range south of your place?
Private timberlands outside Eureka/Arcata were full of the chanterelles. I once picked two of the big paper grocery bags in about 20 minutes on one slope when deer hunting was slow. I was going home with something to eat at least.

If we didn't have an injured dog that needs watching when one of us has other things to do, I might be sorely tempted to make a trip over to the coast. Maybe harvest some mussels on the coast around Trinidad too.

Son told me he tried those lobster mushrooms a couple weeks ago. Said really good flavour but they stay kinda “crunchy” after cooking.

Haven't been to my secret chanterelle and lobster mushroom spot this year. Might try and make it in the next few days, if I can get ahead of the stumps I'm trying to get dug out with the rented excavator. So far not looking good. In the mean time here is a great way to preserve either. After they've cured for a while in the 'fridge I freeze jars of them. Never tried that, I've just used the dehydrator and stored the chanterelles in jars in the cupboard.

I have been looking for hen of the woods and some others, but only getting some edibles that are not the greatest. Don't ever try to feast on Dryad's saddle, because, well of the saddle part!
