Any bobwire collectors on here? Just tore out an old section of fence to replace it with a new steel 5-wire run. Turns out there was some Glidden railroad wire on the old run. Patented in 1874 and sold to railroads to keep those damn sodbusters from stealing barbwire from the railroad, to fence in their homestead. It's 2-point barbs on one round, and one square, twisted wire. If any of you guys want a chunk, lemme know. I kept about a hundred feet of the better of it....

huntsman22: I'd love to have some. Actually working on a barnwood display right now and it would be cool to use that as a border. Let me know how to proceed if you still will part with some. Thanks Ed -tnscouter

One of my uncles had an extensive collection, I don't know what happened with it in the 25 years since he passed. I know very little about barb wire collecting except I was surprised at how many different kinds were made

Curious,

What would keep it from being stolen?

The design? Only the railroad had it?

What kinda crime was barb wire stealing?

All questions I had too. Thanks for asking them.

When I was a kid I started a barb wire collection...my grandmother and I would walk the fences and cut off little sections from the old repairs done with old wire had a bunch of different styles we nailed them to an old barn board...
Had many really old styles probably from the first original fences I was a little kid and knew nothing about wire and still don't but it was fun. Amazing how many different styles there were in the old days...have no idea what happens to that wire board ...it probably got burned with the barn and buried along with the fence rows when dad took over

My dad cousin was a small farmer and as a side job built and repaired fences. I guess he was quite good at it. Anyway he was a barb wire collector. He has passed but I guess at his estate sale there were 100s of types of wire he had collected. The various types of wire was mounted on old barn wood. An interesting hobby for us with farm back grounds.

Interesting, I should start saving some odd wire.

The wickedest wire I've seen is Army razor wire.

I think the railroad was the only ones that had the one flat wire and one round wire, look at the picture and its clear what or where that wire came from.
