Relax Bobby Mags. It’s nothing personal about you and your fondness for mediocrity.

Just say 6.5 PRC for the win.

I have a Steyr Prohunter in .30-06.
The cartridge is a yawner. But it works.
The rifle is kinda neat.
Fully intend to kill a fair number of critters with it.
Dont give a fug

.30-06 IMHO is like .30-30, .308 or .223
No big deal, they work.

And they aint a .270

Good enough LOL

W.D.M. Bell used a 7mm Mauser to kill elephants. He shot them between the eyes with FMJ bullets or between the eye and the ear from the side. Brained them. You really don't need a big gun. With the right bullets almost any caliber could kill almost anything if you hit them in the right spot.

The 30-06 was king of the hill for over 100 years, and probably still is. The 308 is probably a close second, followed by the 30-30. Like someone said, you can find ammo almost anywhere for those three calibers.

Other calibers have been made from the 30-06 case. 25-06, 270, 280, 338-06, and 35 Whelen. I think they even made a 400 Whelen. All are good cartridges for their purpose.

The baby 30-06, the 308, has several calibers made from it's case also. The 243, 7mm 08, the 338 Federal, and the 358. All of these are also good cartridges.

I don't think any other cartridge was made into other calibers than these two. Maybe the 223 is the exception. 223 has been necked up to 243, 270 and 300. Not much else.

I don't think any foreign cartridges have been done this way. Was the 8mm Mauser necked up to 9.3 x 62? Oh, and I forgot the 300 WM was necked down to 7mm Rem Mag, up to 338 WM, and 458 WM.
However I think the parent cartridge of the 300 WM was the 375 H&H.

But the king of the hill still is the 30-06. Every big game animal in North America is legal with it and with the 55 gr Sabot bullets varmints, as well as most everything in Africa except the big 5 dangerous game animals.

You should get a 6.5 x 48 and you could shoot bigger bullets.

Who would pick the 6.5 Elton John, when the ol' ought six is available?

I've got a 30-06. I have bullets from 125 to 220 to choose from. Is that boring?

06, pick of the girly men who couldn't handle the 30-03. They went with the light, short, pointy version.

Yep, the '06 is boring. It has been boring those holes right through 10's of thousands of elk and zillions of deer, doing it right every time. It doesn't give you the chance to ponder whether it'll get it done because everyone knows it will. There's nothing to debate other than whether other calibers are as good.
