This auction was discussed at least a half year ago.

By now the dollar has devalued enough that these rifles have become more affordable.

Dang! Never even heard! And just blew the wad. McDonald "Senior Coffee & "made it a double"i @ $.69x2! If only to have known...!!!

ON a serious note... Anyone with sufficient interest... A Google engineer with economist bent, creating something of "peoples graphs" reflecting dollar trends from 2000 to 2020. Still pretty durn difficult to absorb all if not 'tuned in' to viewing & analyzing such. One important point, the inflationary value from American city to city, is wild. Huge percentage of inflationary increase differences. Might want to check out the nearest big metro area near you! Anyway here it is...
Good thing all this is the "simple" version!!!

So is the consensus of the gurus here that these are legit, and the only question is what they are worth?

I remember reading about #1 in American Rifleman, and most of us own or have access to Rule. The stuff about #2 checks out.

I don't know much about the collector market, but if I had $ to spend on such things (which I don't and never will), I'd pay more for guns owned by famous people than I would for those rifles. Much as I love Model 70 rifles, I'd pay more for Frank Hamer's .45 Colt "Old Lucky" than I would for M70 #1.

I seriously doubt these will bring anywhere near the asking price. They are historically significant but somebody has way overvalued that significance. I thought Wally Johnson’s gun was over priced too but it eventually sold. It had a history way beyond a serial number but was priced at a small fraction of these two. Plus, the rear bridge hadn’t been D&T!

What are the calibers? price would depend on that.

Both are chambered for .30GOV’T’06. Have read somewhere that the first run (20-50 guns?) were all ‘06’s.

M70’s of any chambering aren’t worth that $.

Addition: it is off....so for clarification it was a Custer Last Stand trapdoor that was verified.....$98K....

Here it is again....

"One and "Two" amount to little in comparison......

I do wonder how much the guy that owns them has in them.

I had serial number 2 in my hand back in 2000 at a gun show in Houston, TX. They wanted $25,000 for it, which was a little out of my price range then.

Maybe the seller has mistaken it for Apple stock.

($25 K of Apple stock purchased in 2000 would be worth over 3 million today, just for a fun appreciation comparison.)

First 100 M70s were all 30-06.
Can't remember if I saw it referenced in Rule or elsewhere. I have a low 2 digit M70 so I was kind of interested in this myself.
