OP
I live out in the woods in the North Carolina mountains. Six months a guy moved in about a mile away, he is a Michigan Yankee from the big city.
This morning at 10:30 he called me. He was quite upset.
Last night at 9:30 he let his dog out to go to the bathroom. Just then he saw that there were two bears right in the back yard at the bird feeders. He has 3 of the big bird feeders, each one holds about 2 quarts of bird seed.
The dog immediately attacked the bears. It was dark out there, but he heard the dog yelp a few times.
Bob ran inside to get his 12 gauge. He ran back but the dog and the bears were gone.
Bob called the Sheriff, who told him not to go back out into the yard at night the bears might be hanging around. He called me this morning at 10:30.
I went over there, we looked around for about 20 minutes. The mountain he lives on is steep, about a 40 degree pitch, and thick with rhodedendron and briars. Almost impossible to walk through.
We tracked the bears for about 100 yards down the steep mountain, you could see where the bushes were broken off. After that no more bushes were broken, and there was no blood trail. The dog is gone.

I just got this email a half hour ago:
Jack came home tonight..was waiting for me on porch when i got home from store. He has 3 major puncture wounds. Bear bit him and tossed him but somehow he survived the encounter and 6 nights 4 below freezing. A neigbor is a mobil vet and was 10 minutes away when i called. They cleaned and stitched wounds and no major organ damaged so he's by my side and going to be ok.
Check this pic out. The vet next door came over, they are operating on poor Jack right on the porch of Bob's log cabin.
Unreal story.
I was just out this evening looking for this mutt. I drove around for a half hour on Little Pine and Bear Creek Road. Just about an hour before Jack came home.
I was looking for the little mutt I had a feeling he might still be around, even though he had been missing for 6 days. Must have been ESP.
We have had really cold weather, a low of 26 on two nights, and snow and rain on another night.
Talk about a Christmas miracle.
