Not for me! I have a 1-10 Krieger and a 1-9.5 Benchmark I'll use for the Whelen soon as I get ready to sent it off. RPM's don't hurt good bullets a bit in my opinion and I haven't seen a derogatory effect on accuracy either.

Your rifle sounds like a cool set up! Hope you do it.

I have a .358 and a 35 Whelen but neither gets much action unless something larger than deer is the quarry.

Having killed deer with both, I can tell ya that neither kills bigger-bodied deer any dead’r than smaller chamberings.

Welcome to the fire, Nate.

I have one 358 (custom pre-war M70) that worked just fine on a number of critters (200 gr TTSX) in Africa in 2012. I also have an early Ruger RS that I bedded into a Bansner stock and had matte blued. It has taken Nilgai (250 gr Partition), elk and moose (225 gr TSX) and two black bear (250 gr Speer). Nice lightweight piece. I also have a LaBounty rebore on a pre-war JP Sauer Mauser that has taken a hog (250 Hornady RN). The latter will make next years Campfire hog hunt. Years back a 358 BLR and a 350 Rem SS Ruger.

Plenty of us .358 shooters here.

Also plenty of guys that think they are a waste...to each his own.

I've killed plenty of deer with 3006 and 308s. There's just something different about hitting them with a .358+" bullet IMO.

Does it make a lick of difference?? Probably not.

I mostly like to be different and not shoot stuff everyone else has. Kinda boring.

I know I know. I can't borrow ammo or stop at any ole store and grab ammo when I forget mine. Lol. I get that. Valid enough point. I hunt with all sorts of "specialty" stuff (for lack of a better term). Arrows and broadheads...the inline bullets and loads I run...the rifle chamberings I run.

I combat it various ways. If you're going on a trip and only take 1 gun....you've already messed up IMO.

First guy to post up a picture of their 35 Newton (big game in the picture is extra credit) gets my "loony" seal of approval. (Disclaimer: worth of said approval is unknown)

I am a huge 35 fan, especially the .358 Win. I have two customs in 358 Win both barreled by Pacnor. Winchester Classic SA and Sako AII. They’ve been magic on coyotes, pigs and deer with 225 SGKs out to 300 yds

I have an 1885 High Wall that I sent to JES Rebore and he rebored it to 35 Whelen with a 5 groove in a 10 twist

Very accurate even with Barnes 180 grain TTSX

Yessir Doc, 225 sgk are all you need. The beauty of 35’s is, you don’t need high zoot bullets, the recoil vs killin is very manageable, if ya hunt locales where your wading through salal, Oregon grape, devils club, sword ferns, black berry etc etc with rain blow-in up your ass, they do in fact anchor game faster and with authority than lesser calibers..

For hunting the 225 SGK is indeed a big killer, better BC and SD than the 200s, anything like Elk or Bear, I might swap with a Partition in same...225.

Anyone who has burned 357 handgun bullets out of say a 350 RM or similar on milk jugs at 200 yds know how it makes you smile.

Quite versatile, and underutilized. The RM and 358 WCF are my fave......nothing wrong with a Whelen.

Nate, the guys that had deer run with 243s and 6.5s......likely did not plug vitals with the proper bullet. If an animal is lost, one never knows the path and penetration of a bullet, so it's pure speculation and often the cartridge gets blamed...........hunters NEVER mess up a shot as we know...or fail to choose an appropriate bullet.

All bullets are not created equal...........nor shooters skill.

Yep.

Maybe not so much out in the real world, but here on the Fire, 35's are oft discussed, mostly good stuff.

But, this IS the Fire.... blush

I have only one new, a Remington 141 pump in 35 Remington. Killed a deer with it 2 months ago and it works today as well as it did the year it was made (1941)

But soon I am going to have another upper for my AR10 in 358. Should be a good combo I think. I want to go with the Nosler 225 grain bullets in either Partitions or Accubonds. The sierra in the same weight can be my "practice bullet". Not too bad for a practice bullet as my friend Dan told me he gets good results with that one on elk from his 35 Whelen. But the Noslers will allow me to use it at very close range clear out to the longest practical range the 358 is good for and still give respectable expansion.

I hope to have the upper ready to zero and use mid winter.

I had an 1895 Browning 30/06 rebored to 35 Whelen. It was a lot of gun for NY whitetails so I sold it. Years later I bought a Browning BLR in 358 Winchester. I that that rifle and cartridge much better.

When I did my .358 Win Pre-64 Fwt, .243 rebore project, I could have converted the SA set up to LA, like I did with my Pre-64 .243 that's now a 6.5-284. That one needed a LA, IMO.

But, I didn't think I needed such a stout round in that rifle. The .358 Win seemed a better fit and was a lot less trouble, staying with SA parts. In a Fwt, one can crank the .358 Win to a pretty ferocious beast with the right loads. No, it won't compete with the Whelen, but is stout enough for what I'm using it for. And, I do have M-70 .375 H&H if the .358 Win needs help.

I've got a half dozen 358's from 16" to 24", all Savage lever guns. Love em.

Here's the 16" carbine back when I tried a Burris Fastfire III. It went away now shooting irons.

I built a .35 Whelen on a pre'64 M/70 nearly 30 yrs. ago, it has been my primary whitetail rifle for many years. In the beginning I shot 225gr. Sierra Game Kings over IMR 4064, in the last several years I have been shooting 200gr. Hornady Inter-lok RN over IMR 3031 an extremely accurate load that is lights out for whitetails. If I were younger I would build a .358 on a pre'64 M/70 FWT.

I believe you, Bob. The gentleman I bought the rifle from also gave me a Ruger catalog that showed a 24" barrel for the Whelen. What year manufacture is your Ruger?
