One day this place talks about how rich it is from saving and investing. The next day, it talks about the best place to buy used shoes. What's the point of getting rich if you are just gonna wear used shoes.
I buy walmart clearance sneakers for mowing. They last a loooooooooooong time. Get my 3 or 4 bucks worth outta em 5 or 6 times a summer if I get really motivated to mow.
Renegade50: The VarmintWife has retired TWICE now! She worked at and then bought/owned a very successful business out on the west coast. She sold that business after 25 years of ownership and 'we" retired to Montana (our dream). Little did I (we!) know that the VarmintWife was (is?) a "workaholic"! She did not stay retired for one year til she took a job with the local school district here in Montana. Finally this year she retired "again" with 23 years in the Teachers Unions pension plan so she gets that retirement (pension) check on the last business day of the month. Her very healthy social security check has been coming mid-month for 5+ years now - so she has money coming in fairly often. I agree with your philosophy as I retired when I was 50 years old and kick myself in the ass every day for NOT retiring sooner. Bottom line is you only live once and retirement was/is so much better than w-o-r-k-i-n-g! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
VG, I hear ya. Retired at 54 and went back to work just for health insurance. D-u-m-b. I had been away from the a-holes in American corporations for a while and couldn't believe how stupid they'd gotten since.
Should have just paid the higher premiums. lol
I told khan several yrs ago she didnt have ta work. But she wants too . Kids gone ... Empty nest syndrome. Likes being around kids Teacher at a major day care at 1st Then moved up Director/ curriculum developer at a that day care here in town in charge of 8 rooms Then moved up Now the HR and state and fed head honcho coordinator at that day care.
I paid off 26k of her deferred student fed loans when we got married. That was pleasant discovering that one day when I was doing a sig loan with plans to pay double payments... Had a little discussion with khanarella about her Blutowski college days in 81 and 82....
Then when I retired I signed over GI Bill benny,s to her to finish off her 4 yr in early childhood development while working at the day care.
Possibly the best years of retirement are when you are retired and your wife is still working. Got the house to yourself, no one to think up chores for you, just go and do what you want most of the day. Only hitch is if you want it to work out well you better have something planned for dinner when she gets home. I retired in 2011 at age 59, eight years before the wife. Was nice while it lasted.
I have no idea when she gets paid . She hoards her money in her own accounts and maxes out her 401K . She works at a bank and has good health insurance and gets about 28 days off a year with vacations and every holiday in the book(like today) . She seems to be pretty content with it.
Wife's "paycheck" is on the second Wednesday every month, mine on the fourth Wednesday. We both worked long and hard before we were able to get on that schedule. I started working in 1966 and my wife in 1973. Both are decent because we worked as long as we did AND had decent paying jobs. I, for one, don't miss working at all but do miss interaction with most of the people I worked with.
Someday I hope to be the person my dogs think I am . . . The only true cost of having a dog is its death. Someone once said "a nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves." Shiloh Sharps . . . there is no substitute. NRA Endowment Member

I’m gonna start my new career as a gogetter when I retire.
I’m gonna load Wifey’s ass up in the morning, take her to work, when it’s time, I’m gonna gogetter.
👍👍👍 Thats really thoughtful of you!!!
I think so too. I sprung that on her one night when we went for drinks with some of her friends. One of them ask me what I was going to do when I retired. The look on Wifeys face was priceless.
I'm assuming for many, it's the day after all the bills are due?
Progressives are the most open minded, tolerant, and inclusive people on the planet, as long as you agree with everything they say, and do exactly as you're told.
