Rifle is light, but still has a surprising muzzle forward weight.

Gunsmithing took forever. Work should have been done by May at latest. Covid screwed that up. Barrel was ordered early December 2019. It didn't arrive until late July/early August. Then I had to wait my turn ( work was done by Alberta Tactical Rifle), a large gunsmith/gun manufacturer. Then they found that they had lost/misplaced the reamer. Had to order and wait for a reamer to be imported. Then the barrel was installed, and action blue printed. Stock/action was bedded. Had to wait for my turn on the laser engraver and then the satin sandblasting. I finally got it in very late October/early November, when all attention was focused on deer hunting. Hardly saw coyotes anyways.

Gunsmith said it should shoot 0.5" with factory. I could only find exhorbitantly priced Remington 25gr HP. I made it to the range in December. I had purchased some Nosler Custom cases, but never built a workup series. Good thing. One of my worst days at the range ever. I couldn't do anything right (I had bore sighted 2 rifles including this one, and neither were on the paper at 100. The 25-06 I played around and figured out which way to move it to get sighted in. The 17 was a bitch. Had to go to 50 and finally got it on paper. Made adjustments and went to 100, finally sighted in at 100. Did I mention that I checked both rifles again with the bore sighter and they were both fine? Did the 50 year old Redfield collimator crap out? Did I forget how to do it?) As I said, bad day. Even the 25-06, which is a known shooter, I shot for [bleep]. The 17 was no different. Probably close to 2".

I was happy to have it sighted in and deduced the Remington load would do until I get a handload. Time to hunt coyote.

Due to a number of reasons, I have only been out twice in my mule deer area and made 15 stands. On each day I called a large male, but he evaded me both times, even though I switched things up.

Then at 1630 today, I dropped the hammer on a heavy male. He was stalking the caller. My shot was 150yds, the coyote was 60yds from the caller. The bullet striking the coyote made a surprisingly loud crack that I haven't heard before.

I'll get a photo posted much later today.

Sounds like winning to me.

If you can get Blackhole Bullets in Canada, he makes a dandy 30gr. for 17's.

You're being silly.

Stop it.

Do you like the cup base or flat base?

Flat base in the 17's.
I use the cup base with his 37gr. 20 cal.

Thanks K22. Do the flat base shoot better? What twist are you using to stabilize them?

When I was buying 30gr. bullets from Blackhole bullets I was looking for a 30gr. alternative to Chan Nagels 30gr. which I already had and liked........a lot. Chan's were getting hard to get because he was running out of J4 jackets and Berger who supplied most 17 cal. bullet makers was being a butthole about making those jackets and selling them to the small guy bullet maker. Chan's bullets were flat base so that is what I ordered from Blaine. As a side note, the duplicated the load that I was using for the 30gr. Nagels [I know, not very safe to do that] and seated the 30gr.fb Blackhole bullets. I was shocked. The Blackhole bullets shot the same group sized as the Nagel's did, not only that but they shot to the exact same point of impact. I've never had that happen before.
Later on I was looking for a 37gr. 20 cal. replacement for the 37gr. CRT [Custom Reloading Tools] I had fell in love with, which they were not handling anymore. Blaine offered to try and duplicate them and asked if they were flat base or cup based. We talked about the pro's and con's of that and I decided to try the cup base.
I still don't know which I like the best. The CRT's are flat base and the Blackhole bullet cup base and they both do great on Coyotes and are very accurate. I shot a Bobcat in the chest at around 230yds. with a CRT bullet and never got an exit, the cat was sitting. One cat doesn't tell anything about how those bullets actually work on Cats, but thought I would through it out there. They are working very well on Coyotes.

In the 17 Rem. I'm using a Lilja 9T and the 204 is a Kimber factory 12T.

Have you tried any of the Texas Gold bullets? Dave Affleck recommended them but the guy didn't have any in stock and never called back. Almost forgot about him, maybe he's up and running now?

Had a coyote come up out of a deep ravine and sit down facing me. It moved a few feet closer and sat down again. I had a good look at it and I felt steady. When they plant their ass, they ain't likely to come closer, so i took a frontal shot. Coyote went down then bucked like a bronco 2-3 times, rolled (looked like a shoulder was broken, picked itself up and made a beeline towards the ravine.

Even with snow, it was surprisingly hard to find it's tracks and blood in the shin high grass. Eventually we found it and of course the further it ran, the more stumbling it's gait was and more blood and of course it went over the edge into the ravine, which is about 200 feet deep with near vertical slopes covered in snow and ice.

I glassed the slope and the bottom, but runoff has eroded a channel at the bottom. After two back surgeries and nerve damage in my left leg and two foot surgeries to correct what the nerve damage did to my foot and ankle, I don't run up and down those slopes anymore.

I believe the coyote is dead in the ravine, but i am not risking injury going down looking for it.

I must have been slightly off center on my shot. I'm not sure if the 22-250 would have killed before it made the ravine, or not. I have hit a frontal coyote a little off center and it was anchored on the spot, albeit with a large hole to sew up.

Shot was about 240yds. I'm trying to learn what the 17R is capable of.

That's a shame. Is Remington still using the Hornady 25gr.hp?

I am using Varget with my 30 gr Golds and Nagel bullets in my 17-204, 1-9 Lilja

I wanted to rebarrel a Montana to 20 Practical, but it shoot pretty good as a 223.

My little Sako A1 in 17 Rem works pretty good with my 25 Bergers, Varget in it too.

I might try H414 with the 30's in the 17-204.

Beautiful setup Coyotejunkie. H414 would be a great choice for 30's. It really works great in my 17 Rem. behind 30gr.
A 17-204, man, I need to build one.

That is the ravine it made it into K22. The photo is looking South, so this side gets direct sunlight. It has been a fairly mild winter with extended stretches above freezing in the daytime. This had resulted in ice that has now been covered with fresh snow. Even walking on gravel roads where a vehicle has driven can result in slipping. You never know when you are stepping on hidden ice. Treacherous.

It was about -15C which is about 5F. My fingers get cold pretty fast in this weather. I'm always searching for getter gloves/mittens. Part of that problem is that I basically froze my fingers while skinning, gutting a moose in -43C weather in 1994. Never tolerated the cold the same since.

The rifle she is holding is my Kimber Varmint in 22-250 that is bedded in a Wildcat fibreglass stock. The 26" barrel has been cut to "24, and all metal cerecoted.
